Come on then, which of you lucky buggers has got this and had no problems with it at all?
So far, despite my requests not to, mum has installed it on our two XP family computers only to find it causing problems on both, especially the older machine who's 512mb of RAM just isn't up to the job.
Our internet access is still in tact, though it can just disappear in a second, but our file sharing network is completely gone and any attempt to access another computer's files results in 'you do not have permission to access this computer, please check with your administrator....'
Programmes such as Nero, Limewire, Utorrent, Pro-Evolution Soccer 6, Roxio CD Creator and AVG anti-virus all just ceased to exist when mum 'upgraded'. A large number of warning messages appear whilst you are going about your daily business telling you that this programme has stopped working or that process has failed to execute.
What got me was when I acquired a new Dell C521 with Vista. Roxio CD Creator came pre-installed and literally my first message from windows after the pre-first run was complete was 'Roxio Driver is not compatible with Windows, please contact the software manufacturer'!
Plus it seems easier to have got out of Colditz than it is to great through one of the two Firewalls that come with the machine (no, I don't have both turned on at the same time).
So, who has had no problems at all?

You will need to buy 2 gigs of memory for this pile of Windows shi*te to work.

I've seen Vista on a P4 2.5GHz, 1Gb RAM and high spec graphics & sound and it was slower than Chris Sedgwick, which suprised me
Gooch there are all kinds of different versions of it, some which are more security locked down than others. I wouldn't install it on a home pc unless I was sure 95% of my software worked. XP is more than adequate compared to it from what I've heard.

Ditch it, re-install XP, wait a couple of years for Microsoft to release 2-3 Service Packs and for other companies to release compatible versions of their software for it, then try it again.
Plus the price of components for your necessary upgrade will have come down in price by then anyway.
Honestly, its a lot less painful that way. As this is likely to be Microsofts last ever major OS release, its not like you're going to miss any boat by waiting.
What you could do with XP yesterday, you'll still be able to do tomorrow and for the next few years!

I explained this to my mother but she just didn't listen and now I've moved upstairs with my own machine I don't care but obviously having Vista pre-installed on here is a pain in the arse.
Should have considered an iMAC.

A few weeks ago I blew up my computer whilst cleaning it...I switched the switch at the back and it was some kind of voltage switch...the back of it lit up like a bolt of lightening had struck it. Anyway I rang my insurance and asked if I was covered and they said I was...they took the tower away and then phoned me to say it wasn't worth fixing. They offered me £370 for a new tower and recommended a certain one that I had to go and get from P.C. world. When I got there the chap said that the one they had advised me to get wouldn't play my child's games because it wasn't big enough...he showed me a dial on the monitor which came on when you turned the computer on and he told me that even with nothing running vista takes up a third of your space before adding any games etc. I was told I would need a 2.0 something or other...it must be what you've quoted. A new tower to be able to cope with what my son plays on was nearly £150 more.
I went back to the insurers and they offered me another £120.00 so I accepted this. So then I had nearly £500.00 to buy. I actually opted out of buying the new windows vista because of all the different stories I'd heard about it but there were no window xp computers in P.C. World left so I let my son get a lap top with the vouchers I got sent for P.C. World and I got a Packard Bell Tower off a friend who works for CPC?
Is working a treat but I did get told that microsoft has everyone by the b***s where this vista thing is concerned and is sh*te.

pne4eva2003 I am glad you are pleased with your Dimbows based computer.
My gripe with Windows is that it does all within its power to use its muscle within its market and stifels compatition.
I would not use any Windows based computer because they are not easy to use and are not easy on the eye.

What is Unbuntu?
Is it a complete OS?
Will it wipe XP if I download it on my machine?

Yes thegooooooooooch I have had Macs since 1995. I have a Network in my house of an E Mac, Mac Mini and a Macbook Laptop. The first two are Motorol chip and the laptop is intel. I could run Vista on my Laptop by spliting my hard drive for both Mac and Windows but I am not that stupid.
Macs are coming down in price and they are well designed and look good. If you want to get into Mac get a Mac Mini and use the Monitor you are useing. The Mac Mini is about six inch square.
I am thinking of getting the 17 inch I Mac and giving my E Mac to my three year old son.

Yes, its a complete OS.
It will only replace windows if you want it to.
You can install it alongside Windows and boot into either - good for comparison.
You can also run it from a CD if you don't want to install it on your hard drive.
