Cheers. Think I may have got my hopes up a little too much as my colleague has 'talked it down'. Apparently they took the vacancies down from their website (quicker than they put them up it seems) and now she's saying they might not hold interviews and "re-jig" their staff around instead.
Bit miffed to say the least but still going to pass my CV & cover letter over - no harm in that I suppose.

My team leader at work (also a mate) is going to help me a little to see if I can polish up my cover letter a bit and then just see what happens from there.

If you're not certain to get the alternative position how much are you willing to gamble?

    2. None that won't come back and bite you in the arse.

    3. Definitely not. Knowledge is power. The less they know the better.
    Thanks for replying Sid,

On the job advert they set out clear guidance on the timescale. i.e. 'If successful at application stage you will be invited to attend an assessment centre, Assessment Centre will be week commencing 25th September, you need to attend one of those dates, shortlisting commences on the 2nd - 6th October, if criteria is met you will then be invited for an interview on week commencing 23rd Oct'.
I also didn't want to gamble booking a weeks annual leave on the basis I may have got through the application stage.

No certainty whatsoever on getting this job but it's far more relevant to my professional background and qualifications than my current role.
I'm bored of this! I'm going for a twix

You have a real dilemma Claudius. I wish you all the best navigating through those waters; by the same token I believe you will make the right decisions. Good luck.

Told the line manager I'd ballsed up the dates of a long weekend and I'm not arriving back until late afternoon on the Monday. Just waiting for their approval.

Only just seen this. Will fire off an email tonight when I get home. Cheers Mozzchops.

Edit: where did you find the ad? Can't find it on their website unless they've taken it off?

Sorry to dig this back up again. In the five months since I initially posted, I have got absolutely nowhere. I've applied for 2 jobs but heard nothing back - I also suspect that Reed didn't forward my CV on for one of them as their "consultants" mucked me about.

I had my CV evaluated on CV Library/CV Knowhow which has provided some constructive criticism although it did advise writing my CV in 'third person' and avoiding using I/me/my etc. That sounds a bit daft IMO.

I'm just after more advice on just where to look, what else I can do etc because in all honesty I feel like I'm stuck at a dead end. I've made it my vow to find a new job in the new year and have gone as far as setting myself a deadline of finding one by the end of February. I really despise my current job and know I just can't carry on with it as it's getting to the point where it's affecting me mentally - I've told myself if I don't find a new job by the end of February then I'm just going to walk out of it regardless.

I just don't know how to "sell myself" as I don't have any "real" experience and I'm desperate to avoid anything high pressured. I have my CV up on CV Library, Reed, Indeed and Monster. I just don't know what else to do or where to look.

I would avoid sites like reed and cv-library, although their 3rd person advice is quite good.
Iíve been through lots of redundancy situations and the companies Iíve worked for always offer their recruitment team for advice.
Go for recruitment consultants rather than agents and if they wonít find the time to meet you personally, donít bother.
Limit the number of sites you have your CV on, as agents will just submit your CV all over the place without your permission and your submission wonít be tailored to the job.
For one of my previous roles I had my CV submitted twice, once by an agent, got nothing, 2nd time be a consultant who coached me through the application, which bits to highlight, etc. And got the job 2nd time.
Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and highlighting your strong points, particularly ones that are pertinent to the job you want. Lots of companies are now using their own recruitment teams who search LinkedIn. My current job came from being approached on LinkedIn
