The Clacton By-election - UKIP's first MP?

I see Nigel Farage has asked to be given equal air time with the labour, tories and libs. Every credit to him for being willing to give up so much air time.

We have a country where most issues can be attributed to a growing population (the nhs, unemployment, housing...) and we have a party who want to tighten up the measures by which people can enter the country. There's no mystery as to why UKIP are growing so rapidly.

I've been surprised by how many people I have spoken to recently who will be voting UKIP at the next GE but I can't say I blame them.

I just hope the Labour vote take the chance to send the message to their leadership that being a crap clone of the tories is not acceptable.

That would be the real victory here.

I am sure it is going to be very close, but ultimately there is another election there next year which the Tories will win.

Carswell will win it and he will get back in in May. The good people of Clacton think he is a remarkably good constituency MP and the UKIP vote was strong in the European elections in that area. Personally, I think he is rather odd....

:) Maybe the Greens could be given some of his airtime, after all they actually have an MP?

What single issue?

Immigration. That's the only thing I've heard anyone interviewed in Clacton talk about. I bet hardly anyone knows that aside from immigration it's just a free market, small state, mini-Tory party.

The thing about ukip is that they have the support of elements from two groups who are normally opposed - the affluent and the working class.

Rich people aren't dumb - cash is king, so flat rate tax etc wins their votes as it is a tax cut for the rich. And as much as I'll get slated by some for this comment it is a fact that racism and prejudice is more prevalent amongst the working classes. So the 'we hate Europe', 'we hate immigrants' bits will win their vote regardless of what actual policies they put forward.

Add in to that other groups where prejudice is more prominent such as pensioners and churchgoers (anti gay marriage comments tempt them in) and you have a targeted approach going for every group apart from the middle classes.

The daft thing is that many who are keen on the party because of their anti anything but white hetero indigenous Brits stance will be worse off. But they seem to be oblivious to that.

That's just my opinion of course (we're all entitled to one)

Anti-EU does seem to be a growing trend over there - we think that my missus is entitled to an Irish passport, so she is going to apply for one just in case the UK decides to leave Europe.

The Greens could learn a thing or two from Farridge about making political progress as a party.

Probably right but how much progress could they have made with the coverage UKIP have had? Possibly it's as much about self promotion or marketing?

Alternatively, they could have headlined on one populist policy and run with it.

That's what I mean.

The other issue for the Greens is that the basic socialist beliefs they promote are designed for the betterment of society (across the world) as a whole, whereas your right wing parties always have the advantage of appealing to the betterment of self, which appeals to most people because most people are selfish.

That is something I have noticed - many opinion polls don't include the Greens for some reason.

I've never been asked my opinion for one of those polls but I wonder if people are given green as an option but the number of respondents is so low that they can only be grouped with others?

No one ever asks for my opinion, which is why I probably enjoy spouting it so much on here.
