WTF is this about?

The in-laws compete in something similar down in Warwickshire called shrovetide, I think it's on at the moment, it looks bonkers.

Whilst we have the internet and Netflix etc this is what they still do for entertainment in Burnley.

Free for all to settle a few scores by the looks of it.
 
They play a similar game in Workington over 3 days every Easter. Uppies and Downies. One half of the town versus the other. It's fucking brutal. I'm surprised they don't play it in Bamber Bridge. It's that kind of game. ?
