Lets look at David Cameron instead of...................................

I saw a post about the dirth of investigative journalism, in the present day. Truth is that theyre no longer needed as corruption is no longer hidden.

Weve bred a generation of shoulder shruggers, and Im talking my generation, who whenever something is pointed out either:

A) shrug their shoulders and ignore it, or

B) say, "Whatabout," and then shrug their shoulders and ignore it.

When peoples voices are denied, ignored or silenced by the State, history shows us you head in one direction only.

If it was one or two things you could shrug your shoulders but its every day something comes out re procurement or financial matters or favours etc... Bloody hell, makes my piss boil.

Somebody who donates £400,000 to, or has been a member of, a political party should not be in a position like chairman or director-general of the BBC, surely? The BBC influences not only the opinions of British citizens but citizens around the world, and should be (but clearly isn't) unbiased.

IMO, the erosion of the BBC has been orchestrated by the Tory Party over the last few years- ramped up massively by the current owners of that party. So in 2019/20, they were able to do what they wanted; for example:
  • Stonewall the flagship broadcaster when Johnson refused difficult interviews - hugely boosting his GE campaign.
  • Thinly veiled threats of abolition (in fact no veil at all)
  • Install a huge party donor as chairman... and much more
And because they had undermined trust, there wasn’t the national sentimental will to defend the BBC from that attack. People shrugged their shoulders :sneaky: - when in the past there genuinely would have been public outrage.

So now perhaps we actually DO have a biased BBC. The dilemma is - if pro-BBC people speak out now, they see where the power lies and fear that the public will back the wrong horse (AGAIN) and lose the BBC altogether.

Leaving unreported widespread Tory driven corruption is where the bias lies. The most blatant cases reported in the Independent/Guardian headlines are either not covered at all by BBC or relegated way down below Covid overload, the Royals and their self promotion of bloody Strictly and overhyped LoD. And the main complaint we hear on here is about feckin PC. All deliberately orchestrated as a deflection while they asset strip our national wealth.

If we ultimately get our dominant broadcast media stations owned by foreign multi-billionaires or global corporations - who is that going to benefit?

This is why it gets on my tits when even staunch socialists like @raefil imo so carelessly carp out anti-BBC stuff whenever an opportunity arises.

There does need to be criticism but we have to get the tone and content right. I wish people would stop carping at trivial bbc matters. That absolutely feeds the Johnson agenda. And when we do criticise, it should imo almost always have a tone that is positive about the Institution and just blast the way that institution is being hijacked.

IMO, fair-minded people who support all political parties should be trying to rescue the BBC - not destroy it.

Theres a systematic dismantling of decent institutions. This govt seeks to take control of them and infect them in the knowledge as you say that they become discredited and attacked from all sides. Thereby becoming ripe for either complete takeover or destruction without fear of widespread public opposition. . Similar to how hostile business acquisitions are prepared and implemented. No coincidence at all. The NHS being the biggest target. The most deceitful govt in my lifetime by a country mile.

Cue shoulder shrugging.

@raefil - I somewhat provocatively mentioned you in the above post. You know that you &I have sparred on this type of topic in the past.
I would be very interested to hear your view on this important topic.

I once wrote a similar post......... Sad but true. They don't even hide it anymore. . I even agree with the rest but you've got some front whinging about " whataboutery "... If there was a world Championship I'd put a big wedge on you.

Completely agree.
They are doing the same with Royal Mail/Post Office to the point whereby people will eventually say well its crap anyway why save it.
Exactly the same strategy with the NHS & BBC, as you say underfund, discredit and undermine.
The Tories have been and (IMO) always will be full of self interested people whose pursuit of Mammon is there only goal with no regard for any long term or altruistic reasons or benefits.

Unsure about the BBC but you have my wholehearted support on the other two....The tactics are blatant.. USA here we come... Someone needs to get a grip.

FWIW I think the BBC should remain supported by the licence payers. Once that gets taken away the lurch to the right, that we are seeing now, will increase 10 fold.

Idont believe that its by accident that more and more people are talking of getting rid of the licence, its how this bunch work.

"Populism."

Once in the hands of the Murdoch empire or other it will be the death of free media in this country altogether.

An example is British Gas, the elderly population still swear by the company even though its not actually been British for eons.

Whilst its still in the hands of the licence payers the BBC still has a chance.

In respect of the BBC, a lot of my customers compain about the Licence fee and say they hardly watch BBC (TV) but are ironically listening to Radio 2 or 4, literally half the Day, largely because commercial Radio is full of adverts, but failing to grasp that its the Licence fee funding not only TV but Radio.
The bemusing thing for me also, is that i reckon that the Tory Establishment who espouse commercialism for short term monetary gain and want to do away with the BBC, will themselves trust the coverage and content of BBC News and current affairs over any rival.

Hmmm... Free? They are a government/political mouthpiece and certainly not in the hands of the license payer. Murdock, Patel, Johnson, Blaire, Cummings et al....... What's the bloody difference?

The difference is that they still arent making money from it.

All broadcasters are going to be influenced by external stakeholders to an extent. But in the grand scheme of things, do you honestly think that the BBC has generally been a controlled government mouthpiece during your lifetime - up until the last (very) few years?
