Tomorrow North End play their 5,000 league game at Deepdale against fellow Founder Members, Derby County. The Corona virus dictates that the game will be played behind closed doors denying, for the right reasons, many who would loved to have attended this land mark moment. North End will be the first football league club to achieve this milestone although the doubters will say ..it just means you have been in the lower leagues for much of your existence. That is true to an extent but if you come across one of the doubters...perhaps someone born in PRI and lived all their life in Fulwood who proudly boasts about being a U-NI-TED fan or perhaps foghorn leghorn who was letting off fireworks last week when Liverpool won the league but couldn`t tell you what the pub was called behind the Kop at Anfield. Sit the fuckers down and educate them with a little piece of history.
Tell them that when they joined the glory train you stayed loyal for all your life, doesn`t matter whether you are 9 or 99, tell them your heart almost bursts out of your chest when you say you support Preston North End. Mention to them that this club, your club, were the Pioneers of Professional football in this Country. A team that won the league without losing a game and won the Cup without conceding a goal....in the same season. Tell them that football existed before 1992 and that history is something you can never take away. Tell them that Liverpool were half way up the second division in 1959 when Shankly went as manager and stayed there for 15 years... a year less than he was at Preston. So if they tell you we stole his name for our Kop....just educate them a little.
Tell them of the great players that played for this club, your club, and make sure that Lamb is standing proud on the left side of your chest when you do it. Shankly, Kelly , Finney and the Old Invincibles ..just tell them to stand in the Centre Circle at Deepdale and feel real history...your history because you battled through the dark days and the rainy days and stayed loyal to the club and the place where you were born.
People talk about the Derby as if they were world beaters, well for all their bluster their honours board reads slightly less than ours does. League Champions twice, same as us but only one FA Cup to our two. Yes, Rooney might be playing his time out for them but if Finney had have had the back room staff that footballers today have he would have made Wayne Rooney look like Micky Rooney such was the great mans fantastic ability.
Finally to the players tomorrow night. When you walk out at an eerily quiet Deepdale just give the badge a little rub on the way out and mean it. Look over at Sir Tom`s face in the stand and count to twenty. In those 20 seconds just try to imagine the roar of the crowd as Finney goes down the right wing and cuts inside on his wand of a left foot. Pinch yourself to make sure you are not dreaming and that you really are playing for the same club as one of the All Time Greats of World football. You`ve still got a few seconds left so think of the fans all glued to their screen hoping and praying you pull out the win we desperately need.... for they also serve who sit and wait. This isn`t Old Trafford or Anfield my friends...This is Deepdale, this is history.....make sure you add your name to it.

Had me in tears this JR.... I was looking at an old league table the other day from 1957 and we had just beaten Bolton 3-2 at Burnden Park in front of 37,000 fans to go second behind Man Utd in the top division.... As for Liverpool, they were half way down the second division ..

That genuinely gave me goose bumps.........👏👍🍻

I think Bill Shankly regarded Sir Tom Finney not so much as one of the all-time greats of football but as the all-time great. But yes for all the pain and frustration supporting this club can bring I still actually would not want to support any other team. It is an emotional rollercoaster ride like no other. It has been pretty dismal recently but when things flip around with this club they tend to do so pretty emphatically.

What a great post John! Thought your report in LEP fans panel after Saturday was spot on too! I could feel some anger there!

I salute you JR for the post. I sit in Germany and raise a glass to my passed away father and grandfather. Season ticket holders both.

To the lads who went on with me back in the day.

To Alex Bruce. Brian Mooney. Youl Mawene. Moysey and Sir Tom.

Excellent post, the saddest part for me is that, such is the state of modern football, with its sky dominated, premiership biased, sad myopic way of looking at things, it will be lucky to get a mention !!! Anyway one thing i can guarantee, for all of the premiership hanger on plastic fans, pot hunting here there and everywhere, i can say to them all and know in my heart that its true, not one of them will know the sheer pleasure and emotion that we all feel on the very rare occasions when a small club like ours, that you have followed all your life manages to have a little success, when you wait for something for so long, the moment is so much sweeter. Up the whites, or as they said in my dads generation, play up the Lillywhites

Nice original post about our heritage, great it is, but unfortunately the majority of this was filmed in black and white and I think we have fully exploited and exhausted this rich past. Just wish it was now the time for some modern history makers, honestly thought we were in with a chance at the beginning of the year. Can the dream be recovered?

Great Post JR, from the heart, football played at Deepdale long before United at Old Trafford or Liverpool at Anfield, we did the double 1st, The Invincibles, our club is steeped in history that can never be taken away, we are The Genty. 👍😀

Absolute brilliant post, the best I have read on this forum!!
I just hope the team can read this before tomorrow’s game and realise what an honour and privilege it is to play for this very proud and famous Club!
First class post again!!

How do you think history from over 50 years ago will motivate the modern day player, show them premiership money, celebrity, bling and the chance of getting some, they might be interested.

Got a mention on Radio 5 Live this morning. They did however manage to get in that we only did it first because Notts County were recently relegated from the League
