... but not from Preston. It started when I was 10 and my aunt used to send me the odd programme and stuff from the LEP. I still have them. She left home in Scotland after the war to work in the Preston Royal Infirmary and lived in Ribbleton for many years.

When I was a teenager at school in Scotland, everybody had an English team and it was the usual suspects but I wore a PNE enamel badge on my uniform and it caused discussions!

As it turned out, I later lived and worked and watched and played football in Preston for many years. Great times and I’m sure there must be other PNE-loving ‘foreigners’ with tales to tell!

Randomly I support North End predominantly because of my Gramps, who was from Motherwell but lived in Ribbleton, taking me to my first game as a kid (He'd moved down from Scotland to Preston during to the war).

Great story ‘ Well.....

My Mum used to work as a ward clerk at the PRI in the 60’s and 70’s and she always used to bring me programmes home on Saturday teatime....

I think the club used to send a load of programmes to the hospital for the patients and if there was any left , then my mum would bring one for me...

I love stories like this about our beloved PNE.

I remember when I was in NZ some years ago and was wearing my NE top of course. This fella came up to me and said "do you mind if I tell you a story about Sir Tom Finney"? Have a guess at my reply :D

Anyway, it seems he had a business down south somewhere specialising in expensive and unusual plumbing parts. He received a 'phone call one day and the conversation went something like this: " Hello, Spencer's supplies. "Hi it's Tom Finney's in Preston here, have you got a, 'so and so' in stock"? "Yes and we can dispatch it immediately if you wish". "Oh don't you want us to pay for it first"? " Ha ha ha, if Tom Finney diddles me out of £X pounds I'll dine out on that story for the rest of my life Ha ha!

"I hope you don't mind me coming up to you this way" he said. "Not at all I said", I'll now dine out on that tale for the rest of my life ha ha! :D:cool:

True story BTW

Mine is a slightly different take on being a North End fan.I was born and brought up in Ribbleton and moved to Darwen when I was 15. Never for 1 minute did I consider supporting anyone else but Preston. My son came into the world when Rovers were just about to hit the big time but he never wavered and supported North End and stood and sat with me on many legendary home and away trips. Unfortunately he lost his battle with leukemia last year but the best times and greatest memories all involve our beloved North End.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your son, but I hope that the memories you have, offer you comfort.

First of all can I say how sorry I am for your loss. I too was born and brought up in Ribbleton. My son was also born somewhere else other than Preston (boo) but, like your son, there has never ever been any team other than N.E. for him.

My son now lives out of the country but follows NE all the time. I really feel for you because I miss that connection so much and therefore can only imagine how it must feel for you. Hang on to the memories, they are precious.

My Mum worked at PRI around the same time but she never brought me any programs home. I'll be having words next time I see her! 😁

My lad is a big PNE fan and we still go to games together (though obviously not right now). He only supports them because of me though, he's never actually lived in Preston. I hope he's on here posting something similar to you when he's your age! I took hime to his first match when he was about 5, bought him a Baxi PNE top in the club shop, and he loved the whole experience. He's never looked back.

We lived near Middlesbrough at the time and all his mates at school had red shirts, be it Boro, Man U, Arsenal or Liverpool. Again it caused discussions and the mates he's still in touch still have PNE as their second team. :)

Deeply sorry to read of your son. I too was brought up in Ribbleton. I don't have any kids but my best memories of my dad all involve watching PNE.

So sorry to hear about this. You will always have those memories to look back on fondly though and I hope that gives you some solace.

I honestly have never read anything sport related that started to warm the cockles of my heart only to dash them in a couple of sentences. So sorry but appreciate hearing of your trips in the better times.
