We've had a few on this subject but thought it was time for another and no doubt I'll be blown out of the water. :)

I accept that mankind isn't doing itself or the Earth any favours with pollution etc and we are bringing on something more speedily than it needs to be.. but:

How can we stop the inevitable? It's going to happen anyway.

The Universe/Solar system is expanding and we are moving slowly away from the Sun so it stands to reason the climate will get shitter. Mars seems to have been a similar sort of place to ours but moved out of range and died a death a zillion years ago.

Doesn't it stand to reason that Venus will eventually move slowly into a similar orbit to ours and then be able to develop and sustain life when we are no more?

Makes perfect sense to me but we'll all be long gone by then so we'll never know if I'm right.

Conclusion ( and just a hunch)..... It's 2024 and we can't avoid traffic jams, railway cancellations, greed, poverty and bloody pointless wars et al.... so what are the chances of planet hopping in order to survive? I reckon we'll be well extinct by the time physics does it's job so we need to stop worrying.

Disagree with the highlighted, get shut of Mike Lynch and railway cancellations will get back on track.

We'll scrap over this Reacher.... Very few say " fuck off " to our leaders and have the clout and balls to do it....... He has and has done. More power to his elbow I say.

I like Lynch, a clever orator, and knows how to put a politician in there place.

What I don't like about him is the total disruption to everyday travel in London, millions of commuters completely left stranded daily for nigh on 2 years. RMT strikes didn't damage private rail companies, just the millions of workers trying to get to work but unable to. Sooner rail companies are nationalised and the trains become automated, and Mike Lynch and the RMT are unable to fuck people's lives up anymore the better.

I was completely behind him a few years back when he was asked about workers on zero contracts and those getting below living wage, his reply was the RMT will fight for exploited workers and the low paid. A load of bollocks he will lead the RMT and the rail workers into continuous strikes, disrupting workers lives and travel without doing any damage at all to the owners

When National Railways is back and is owned by the nation, the last person I want controlling the workforce is Mike Lynch. I love Marxists, listening to them but in charge of important workforces such as the RMT, no thanks, only one loser, the commuters, ask the wife, years of RMT and ASLEF disruption takes it's toll.

When I was an activist as a young man, bought the Socialist Worker weekly I was all for strikes after strikes, bring down the government. Unfortunately I SA what the dockers and seamen's strikes did, along with other crippling strikes we lost most of our industries, other factors contributed, bad management and lack of investment, caused the collapse of everything we had. Germany, Italy, France, Spain etc still have car industries and more manufacturing, a lot of this countries problems arose out conflicts between unions and company owners.

Sorry Libs great bloke that Lynch is, I backed him for a long time, not anymore, I support the commuters ahead of the RMT, got sick of the missus arriving back from work after an horrendous journey caused by transport strikes, not rarely but daily, and at the same TFL were closing every single toilet facility on the network, disability services, lifts and helpful staff broken, and staff nowhere to be found.

Fuck the RMT.

Interesting outlook Reacher....

So you believe that militants actually caused the downfall of our industries rather than greedy cunts selling them off to private ventures ?

Don't let your wifes travel woes lull you into a reversal of your early instincts

We both believe in Nationalisation by the look of it so how is that to be achieved other than pissing people off ?

If you're really ticked off then the strikes are working which is the whole point and why it's the only way to bring about change.

All you've got from this is anger and apathy which the current government loves because it allows them to bob along doing what they do best which is skanking us for a profit.

Don't fall for it my friend.....or you might turn into a tory :)

Libs we had the largest Merchant fleet in the world in the sixties, a massive fleet second to none. Our ports were enormous and had shipping queued to load and unload. Think about it, Liverpool, Glasgow, Newcastle, London, even Preston had a busy active port. I know during the dock strikes late sixties we lost a lot of trade to Dutch and other European ports.

I don't know why everything we manufactured or excelled in collapse, why did British Leyland collapse, cars, lorries, wagons, buses, Leyland buses were in every countries public transport. Everything we manufactured went out of existence, yet other countries didn't. Competition was everywhere the far east and Europe our industries managed to collapse. I know a lot struggled to survive with constant industrial action.

Why we lost everything I will never know, we just gave up competing, the sell off of our utility companies, transport, and energy companies was just the capitalist governments wanting to get rich off the countries assets.

As far as I can see the RMT do no-one any favours, just cause massive problems for commuters and those trying to get to work on daily basis, generally the people have supported them but the strikes which last for months and months are no longer welcome, people lose their jobs as a result, the gig workers and those with employers who won't put up with employees who have to commute because they cannot afford to live near their work

I don't know what fucked up our country, capitalist governments, unions, bad management of industries. I am sure that there are smarter people on here that can set me straight, I do know that we are a badly run country that has fallen behind most or Europe and slowly but surely the rest of the world.

There was a need for change in 1979. There was a need to quell the power of the unions as it was being misapplied at times.
What came next was even worse and did most of the damage you describe.
-Guaranteed dividends for shareholders.
-Profiteering
Etc etc etc

I do.... We got it cheaper elsewhere... I believe they now call it " outsourcing " which is the current metaphor and excuse for pissing on our own chips and driving down workers rights and pay..................

Greed is the only thing that has brought on our Countries demise and the odd thing that can still stand tall that's in a position to do it has every right to do so and we should applaud them.

And I'm very sorry if my opinion pisses on your wifes travel plans ;)

I wish the morons destroying the planet would go spend a week with farmers and beekeepers. It might influence them, but I doubt it, the damagers are incapable of understanding fundamental ecology. Killing off species, plant and animal is incredibly dumb, criminal and against everything us humans should have the intelligence to respect and protect. Killing off and not protecting Bees is just about the most stupid thing that us dumb fuckers can do, yet we do it. Without the pollinators we die, it's as simple as that.

Bumblebee nests may be overheating, killing off broods and placing one of the Earth’s critical pollinators in decline as temperatures rise, new research has found.
Around the world, many species of Bombus, or bumblebee, have suffered population declines due to global heating, the research said. Bumblebee colonies are known for their ability to thermoregulate: in hot conditions, worker bees gather to beat their wings and fan the hive, cooling it down. But as the climate crisis pushes average temperatures up and generates heatwaves, bumblebees will struggle to keep their homes habitable.

Most bumblebee broods would not survive at temperatures above 36C, the paper, published in Frontiers in Bee Science, concluded. The research team reviewed 180 years of literature, and found that for all bumblebee species studied the optimum temperature range for incubating nests was between 28C and 32C.
Peter Kevan, the lead author of the study, told the Guardian: “If [bumblebees] can’t keep temperatures below what is probably a lethal limit of about 35C, when the brood may die, that could explain why we are losing so many bumblebees around the world, especially in North America and Europe.”

That is true enough, moving much of our manufacturing overseas, only we didn't move it we lost it, all of our car and motorised manufacturers gone. We had massive production in the Midlands, the North and throughout the UK, we were a massive industrial nation. Things is so did Germany and France, built a lot of their car plants overseas, even joint production of vehicles, the Europeans did it right and we fucked it up. Plenty of Audi's, Mercs and Volkswagen for sale in the UK. You can buy here in the UK, Citroen, Renault, Opel, not as good as German stuff but plenty sold. Germany even jointly build the Spanish Seat, VW engine, great cars.

What do we build that is British? What happened to our once magnificent industries, gone, disappeared, a lot to do with our management, workforce, designers and industrial track record. Sure we sell everything off, think it was Blair who really went for it, more so than Thatcher. We sold off anything we should have been developing, Rolls Royce, Jaguar, the fucking Mini, we are a wank country, how we are still living in houses is beyond me, Oh wait a minute a lot of us aren't, hundreds of thousands in one room slums and thousands intents and boxes.

What happened to the UK and it's manufacturing, used to be world leaders, motors, aircraft, shipping and we fucked it all up.
