Coronavirus football options summarised (Premier League Restart 17/06/20 (post1,630)

Looks like shenanigans at Levels 5 and 6 (National League), as the Essex Senior League tweeted the following, then deleted it:

"Following on from the pre-arranged Webex meeting today with the FA and our colleagues in Step 5/6 leagues, The FA have confirmed that the season 2019/20 must end immediately. The consensus was there is no option of any football being played for the rest of this season due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Even if the FA were to extend, it wasn’t going to be possible to complete remaining games, also subject to being allowed to socialise by May."

That’s Step 5&6 of Non-League so tier 9&10. Nothing to do with National League.

It isn’t but the National League are reportedly going to call time on the season. The next two steps have already said they want to do the same but are waiting on the National League before coming to their final decision, so that would be steps 1,2, 3 and 4 all in line.

Player contracts usually run until 30 June.

Contracts don't include vague duration terms like "until the end of the season".

I'd think they're going to have to allow some sort of interim arrangements, both in terms of keeping clubs going and player movement. Strikes me that if the season is to be finished then player movement that couldn't have happened if it finished as normal shouldn't be able to happen. i.e. a contract that was to end at June should be extended until an agreed replacement date within the new "close season" whenever that may be.

The finances of this could get messy, very messy.

Bullshit that, bet they don’t refund the affiliation fees or the booking fines from this season. Shocking decision to make when it’s not even April yet.

:(

Daughters team were on a run of winning every game played this season, reached the final in 2 cups and now it will all count for nothing.

EFL chairman has called for a "reset" of the business model of the 72 league clubs.

Hopefully the crisis won't be swiftly forgotten and we'll get it.

A reasonable salary cap system allowing a couple of expensive Rooney-style designated players per squad would be a good start.

Scrapping parachute payments for relegated Prem clubs and replacing them with mandatory player wage cuts down to the Championship capped level would be another.

In theory it is ok but scrapping parachute payments would be good except that it would give that money to the Premier clubs rather than share it evenly down the EFL. And clubs like Derby and Sheff Wednesday would find other ways of beating the ffp system.

The chances of finishing this season and actually having next season are diminishing by the day.

wimbledon is due to to start at the end of June and has now been cancelled. Is it time for football to just hold its hand up and say thats it, season over and void?

The thing is that'd only work if we could start the next one early August, thinking about how far away we are now from crowds of tens of thousands of people going from one end of the country to the other it's by no means guaranteed we'd be ready by then. Other than the Euros in June 2021 there's no end limit to when this season can go on til, I'd rather end this season whenever that may happen and work out something to do during whatever gap is left than cancel this one and risk having both this and next season as ones that can't be played in full.

I honestly believe with players contracts coming to an end at the end of June it will no longer be practical, nor fair to play the season on after this point.

Aye, I guess it's might end up being about whether they're prepared to put getting the season finished ahead of their contracts and the cash, we all know what'll happen if that's the case

Exactly this, and some of the wealthier clubs, vying for the play offs, will certainly be attempting to tempt key players away from their present clubs, whether theyre allowed to play or not.

There has been more and more talk of not completing the season. e.g. the weekend stories of Pep saying LFC should be awarded the title if that happens.

The only way I can possibly see the season being played out, is behind closed doors. I can’t see the government wanting people travelling up and down the country for quite some time. Football is pretty much lost now in the severity of this virus. Far too many other important things going on.
