Derby Days

Dunno why but Carlisle Utd used to be classed as a derby type game even though it's in Cumbria. Remember some of the games in the 80s & they hated us for some reason...lots of kicking off at Deepdale and up in Carlisle. Also Bradford & Stoke always nearly classed as local games . But Blackpool has always been the derby for us but Burnley games in the 90s went close too

Bradford and Stoke must be 90/95 miles away.
It's like PNE/Wrexham being classed as a Derby and Wrexham's closer while being in another country.

To be fair Brighton v Crystal Palace is classed as a derby despite them being 60 miles away which is always find quite a weird one. I read someone that Brighton are classed as palace’s biggest rivals by palace fans which again is very weird considering there are so many London clubs.

Isn’t Terry Venables something to do with the rivalry?

Lot of rivalry going back to the 1980’ s John when they were both in tier 2 of the football league.....

I also think that Terry Venables or Alan Mullery whipped up a lot of the rivalry....

I just checked and it makes interesting reading Jarjar.....

Barrow to Carlisle - 86 miles
Preston to Carlisle - 86.7 miles
Morecambe to Carlisle - 68 miles

so, Carlisle and Morecambe it is then......
Aye I suppose Barrow isn’t the easiest place to get to. Was speaking to a Carlisle fan after Barrow got promoted. He said it was quicker and easier to get to Crewe!

First time I recall any beef with Carlisle was 81/82 when Pop Robson scored a late winner at Deepdale after we had battered them for 90 mins. Don't think we'd played them for a while and the clubs were going in opposite directions. Carlise went up and we struggled to stay in Div 3 for the next few seasons.

Slightly earlier than that, the FA Cup 3rd round game at Deepdale January 1975 comes to mind for me.
Big attendance 18,600 with a big Carlisle following and Carlisle fans being escorted round the ground from the home Kop end.
