Extinction Rebellion

Just saw this on the news and it is exactly the sort of project I love:

Far better than dredging and big concrete barriers all over the place which usually just redirect floodwater elsewhere and move the problem.

Fun fact…. There’s aren’t loads of English towns and cities that genuinely have names in proper Welsh language. Glastonbury is one … called Ynys Afallon.

Ynys is Welsh for Island. An interesting point because the name originated hundreds of years ago, before the Somerset levels were drained.

This is a technology I am covering at the moment and it has a lot of promise - while it reduces emissions from ships by a few percent, that adds up to pretty significant reductions once you consider the sheer tonnage of vessels we use:

It will also reduce costs for ship operators, creating yet another win/win situation. Very promising, especially when combined with alternative fuels, such as methanol, and even sails.

My life spans too short to worry about such things but I'd really like to be around to witness what we could achieve without incorporating greed .

What do you reckon ? : :)

This is very, very sad - a beautiful, iconic tree that can never be replaced. What drives somebody to do that, I will never understand. Must admit, I have been bemused by the number of people claiming that a 16-year-old lad couldn't possibly be strong enough or skilful enough to do that - clearly, they are people who have never lived in the countryside or used a chainsaw!

The new IEA report is out, with an analysis of progress on reducing emissions. Still working my way through it, but there is quite a bit to be positive about. They anticipate emissions hitting their peak and starting to decline in the next couple of years, even with no further action:

Most of this is driven by natural increases in renewable energy manufacturing capacity and installation - it is now more cost effective to install renewables (new electrical system technologies certainly help with that - it is much easier to integrate renewables into grids). Electric vehicles are also likely to have an effect.

There is always more that can be done, as noted in the report, but it is nice to see that we are starting to turn the corner. There is hope. :)
