I had a Mark1 escort in the 70s which was more filler than metal by the time it came to be scrapped!Biggest problem in those days was the rust, almost impossible to keep it under control, my father was a genius on bodywork, fibre glass mesh and pudding as they used to call it and then a respray.
I used to work with a guy who in his youth had worked for Rootes in Coventry in the engine plant. He used to tell stories of the line being closed down for a couple of weeks at a time and all the workers being shipped out by bus to fields around the city where the already produced, but unsold cars, were parked in fields, up to their axles in mud. There job was to weed the engines, remove the moss and get them ready for sale. No wonder the damned things were rust buckets!
