Favourite Cars Owned..Old and New.

Biggest problem in those days was the rust, almost impossible to keep it under control, my father was a genius on bodywork, fibre glass mesh and pudding as they used to call it and then a respray.
I had a Mark1 escort in the 70s which was more filler than metal by the time it came to be scrapped!

I used to work with a guy who in his youth had worked for Rootes in Coventry in the engine plant. He used to tell stories of the line being closed down for a couple of weeks at a time and all the workers being shipped out by bus to fields around the city where the already produced, but unsold cars, were parked in fields, up to their axles in mud. There job was to weed the engines, remove the moss and get them ready for sale. No wonder the damned things were rust buckets!

I bought a cheap Rootes Sunbeam Rapier once (rusty as hell), really cheap, and took my girlfriend (later my wife) for a trip in it to a country pub near Preston (can't remember which one), and it started pissing down and the wipers didn't work. So I tied some string to each wiper and made a loop, she had to pull each side and manually work the wipers, with the help of a dysfunctional wiper motor, it burnt out by the time we got home, she wasn't impressed.

We managed to get home safe thankfully, the risks I took to impress.

I’ve never had any “ sexy” cars…. Mainly Ford Fiestas..

Boring I know…..

Worst Cars...anyone remember this, produced on Ribbleton Lane?

Made Del Boy's Reliant look like a Rolls Royce. I never met anyone that owned one.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Toyota Landcruiser Amazon & Suzuki Vitara commercial. If I had the time & room I would like to buy and restore the first two, still have the Suzuki and will get round to restoring it one day….

In my first few years of driving I had a mk4 Cortina, mk1 Astra, MG Montego and 2 xr3i's. As well as I remember them I think they spent more time with the bonnets up being repaired. In hindsight I'd have kept them all in a barn somewhere, I could retire if I sold them at todays prices.

That list looks like what would now be a classic car museum, apart from the Sharan

Great thread. Would you also all look at a couple of new cool threads I’m about to start:

What was your first pet (and what was it called?)

Whose mother had the weirdest maiden name?

Cheers 👍
