Game of Thrones

well..what an awful ending to an awful final series!
7 years of building to 'winter is coming' and how are they going to kill someone who is already dead, then over in 1 episode
the good queen who will reunite the 7 kingdoms turns evil and decides to kill everyone
then its as if the writers didnt know how to end the series so just decided to make no real decisions and make everyone walk off in different directions without a real outcome to the whole story

*Spoilers*

Have to say it is a bit odd that we are made to follow Daenerys for 8 seasons and then that happens straight away in front of the throne.

This is why 10 episodes were required, they could’ve turned her evil in a much slower, more realistic manner.

Hardly a punishment for Jon going back North. Pretty sure he said to Tormund in episode 4 that he wishes he was going beyond the wall with him. He’s a wildling and has been since he was with Ygritte.

Also very rushed how the new leader is suddenly chosen. Seasons 2-6 were sensational. 10 episodes, good and long different story lines throughout, all about the people, the dialogue and the politics.

The last couple of seasons have felt a bit action movie-ish, although that’s hard to avoid given the requirement to show the battles.

Nail on head.

Utterly, utterly shite last series.

Piss poor ending.

Feel absolutely cheated.

~~ SPOILERS AHEAD ~~

Not been a good series, but given how the series had gone, not the worst ever episode IMO.

Some bits were rushed, sure, but could say that about the last two series, should have been a 10 episode series again frankly, even if it took three years.

The last episode has bits of intrigue and dialogue that we’re like the early days of GOT for me and it was a little nostalgic even, if only it was for a fleeting few minutes.

Got to say that in there end there being two kingdoms and Starks ruling over both of them is not something I envisaged.

Jon’s plight seems sad but as someone else mentioned, maybe it makes for a rather nice getaway for him.

As for Arya, if her Christopher Columbus style voyage ending isn’t the start of a spin-off then I don’t know what is.

Overall - the last two series have been too rushed, sadly. The ending whilst certainly not perfect, nor decisive, was alright - would it ever have been possible to make it perfect for everyone? Bitter-sweet in my book, least it didn’t pander too much to fan fiction.

The biggest fail for me was the white-walker story being dealt with so quickly and simple. That needed bulking out.

Whilst the final two series took an edge off it for me, frankly Game of Thrones has probably been the best TV show I have ever watched, I have loved the stories, characters, backstories and development of each of these aspects throughout. Not been perfect, but bloody dam good.

I have no doubt I will watch it through entirely again in years to come.

I'd just like to thank JD, a few years ago he posted who he thought would rule westeros by the end of game of thrones, I had a look at the odds and they (won't say who for those who haven't seen it) were going at 25/1, so I thought bollocks to it I'll stick on a tenner... once again thanks JD I'll buy you a few pints on me next time I see ya! :)

So I was looking forward to hearing what a certain very talented, but untrustworthy, Welsh ex Man Utd winger thought of the last episode, as billed in Thronecast.

Turns out Giggs is in fact a rapper, albeit one who can barely string a coherent sentence together or form a logical opinion.

Great choice for a talking head.

Series 8 should have been entirely about the White Walkers advancing all the way down to Kings Landing. Otherwise what was the point of them?

Daenerys and her 2 (at the time) Dragons saving the day in the Series 8 Finale.

Series 9 should then have been about the fallout from this between the saviour of the people (Dany) who now has their love and support and the tyrant (Cersei) who never had the love nor support of the people.

War breaks out with the Final Finale seeing Cersei defeated by Dany, a smouldering burnt city, Jon retreating North and in the final ever scene, a Wildling being ambushed... and moments later, his eyes turn ice blue.

Also an appalling tipper. He held a private event at a cinema I worked at last year. Despite being told the screen he'd reserved could only hold about 60 people, he invited at least double that which obviously increased the workload of the 6 of us working behind the bar/in the kitchen. Some of his mates were scum, openly abusing some of my colleagues who were just trying to do their job. When the night was at an end, and the cinema a complete and utter tip (which, to be fair, it usually can be), he'd run up a bill of well over a grand. His generous gift to those of us who'd attended to his every whim? £15. Between 6 people. He can get fucked. I'm glad his music's shite and he's thick as pig shit.

Getting right back into GOT after getting to season 6 and then abandoning it a few years ago, for what reason I can't remember. Just re-watched the Red Wedding episode which still makes me shiver; it's fucking 'orrible!

Who are the best actors as far as you're concerned? It's a stellar cast but the best for me are Stephen Dillane (Stannis), Iain Glen (Jorah), Charles Dance and Peter Dinklage. Always get a bit giddy when it's one of their scenes.

The only character I have no time for is Samwell Tarly. He's not funny and I almost always switch off when he's on screen.

Might at well stop at the end of series 4. That’s where it goes off a cliff.

Felt really sorry for Sue, trying to coax anything vaguely coherent out of him. Which idiot booked him?

SPOILERS INCOMING!

Holy fucking shit. Just watched Episode 4 of Season 7 and think the battle between Daenerys and the Lannisters might rank as the best so far.

The scale of it is obviously stunning but it’s the way so many threads are brought together that makes it amazing TV. The first meeting between the two dominant forces, Tyrion watching his brother nearly getting burnt to a crisp, the very real possibility of Bronn being killed off and the vulnerability of the dragons to heavy artillery being exposed. It sets up the last 10 or so episodes brilliantly for me.

I thought aspects of Season 6 were pretty lame by GOT’s own standards tbh but Season 7 is as good as 3 or 4 for me so far (I realise I’m way behind the times!).

That's good. I've loved TV for over 40 years and I like it that GOT makes headlines.

It doesn't grab me emotionally though.

I cried when Anthony Edwards' character died in ER. He'd been in 182 episodes though and I'd watched them all.

I think the fact that the axe seems to be permanently hanging over every character, which is conventionally cited as the show's greatest strength, is perhaps it's greatest weakness.

I'd tend to agree but three storylines, or maybe just moments, have definitely moved me: the whole Ygritte and Jon love story was beautifully observed I thought even if it's essentially just a classic case of doomed love, Jorah's utter devotion to Daenarys and redemption after saving her in Meereen and Jaime and Tyrion's hug just before Tywin is shot (their whole relationship is wonderful).

So, just finished the entire thing now. Really wish I’d caught up in time for start of last season, but whatever.

The state of Season 8 is symptomatic of the slowly diminishing quality of GOT as a whole from the end of Season 4 onwards. That’s where it peaked, IMO. It was the best show on TV bar none.

As JD says, Season 8 should have been about The Wight Walkers’ advance on King’s Landing. For their demise to happen in a single episode at the hands of an unworthy assassin (Arya’s great but she shouldn’t have killed NK) due to a stab wound to the hip was pathetic. The whole battle in Ep3 was also very average compared to others throughout the series. I did cry like a baby when Ser Jorah died though.

I didn’t mind the decision to turn Daenerys into the destroyer of King’s Landing (I certainly didn’t see it coming) but my only problem with it was the motive. I just couldn’t see one initially. However, if the thinking behind it was that she was going down the same route as her father, I would have liked to see that develop more. I actually thought there were signs that she was starting ever so slightly to lose her grip on her own sanity. It would have made a more interesting finale to see her turn psychotic after being convinced of her benevolence for so long, than to see her liberate the entire world, as pleasing as that would have been.

This is the whole issue with the last series though. They tried to squeeze what I think was, or could have been, two extra series’ worth of story into 6 episodes. I guess the creators just wanted it over and done with. And, to be honest, I don’t know how enjoyable another two series would have been given the quality of some of the writing over the last few years.

I thought the death of Dany was a sham and so poorly orchestrated by the writers. The old ‘Jon has confirmed his loyalty to her, kissed her passionately but, surprise surprise, he’s stabbed her during the kiss’. The deaths of Cersei and Jaime were also rubbish. Jaime deserved better, Cersei crueller. They were a bit of an afterthought.

GOT had the potential to be one of the greatest shows ever. But I think it’s fallen just short.
