Match Day - PNE v Coventry - 29/12/20 - 19:45 - Championship

Off the top of my head Maguire and Barky up top with Riis and Stockley on the bench
Barky and Sinclair as wing backs
Browne in various positions as you have conceded

Maguire is a striker. Barky has hardly played up front all season. Barky
And Sinclair played wing backs because we had ZERO full backs available at the time.Browne plays several positions because he can play several positions. The manager just doesn’t play players anywhere. They are tactical decisions that he makes. You are clutching at straws here big time.

See the thread the curse of versatility.
Makes the point better than I can

But what you’re saying is he’s played people out of position, but on the most part that has only been out of necessity. Not just cos he can

He plays players out of position .
The are players for the position available so either a. Out of position player is deemed better than specialist or
b. Doesn't trust specialist.

If b then get rid

Barky and Sinclair at wing backs were because we didn’t have a single full back available

Browne is moved to right back when we are short of full backs

Both necessity.

Barky played up front because he’s in form and we changed formation to match Coventry. Hasn’t played up front this season very often

As per what @jamesOB says. I think the only one I can remember that was completely in a position they should never play was Ledson at RB, but that was presumingly also out of necessity (cannot remember the situ).

Can you name any others just out of interest @SuffolknWhat ?

Even that was because Browne Fisher and Hughes were all out injured

Aye, what's going on these days? Used to be tradition on New Year's Day to be knackered, head throbbing, go on t'nobbers and see us lose.
I always thought that the police could have had a field day with their breathalysers around football grounds on NYD. A lot of people drink and drink all evening, losing count of what they’ve had - top up before bed with a couple of spirits about 2 or 3am, and 12hrs later they’re behind the wheel.

I could definitely drive now, wasn’t too heavy-a-night- but I missed a couple of matches in the past where I guessed I’d still be over the limit.

DJ playing anywhere but in the 10 spot

DJ played in the 10 spot all last season pretty much.

Even if DJ plays deeper that is still his position he can play. The good thing with Browne and DJ is they can played as a central midfielder or play in the 10.

You are really clutching at straws here and I don’t really know why. Give an example of when Alex played a player out of position when there was better options on the bench.

Ok.
I'll use Barky.
He ISN'T a striker.
We had REAL strikers in the bench.
(Mind you they can't double up as wingback)
Edit I'll add Harrop as wide left

He could play in nets like Gally did, doesn't make him a keeper.
I'm struggling to see the point here.

Plays Barky up front (has a record better than 1 goal every 3 games when played as a striker) but that's in the "square pegs round holes" category because he's keeping a League Two standard striker on the bench?

Harrop, no-one quite knows what he is after almost 100 career appearances over four seasons for us. Glimpses of magic, spells of mediocrity. Will probably need a move to further his career as it isn't happening here.

Players don't just have one position under Alex Neil. Versatility is a really key attribute for his players to have given we don't have the quality in depth.

Browne is ahead of Rafferty in the right back discussion, simply because he's a better right back than Rafferty. DJ can play as an 8 or 10. Barky isn't "just" a right winger.

Just trust the manager to do the job he's paid handsomely to do. He sees them daily, we see them once or twice a week if selected.

If he's not picking players such as Harrop then there's probably a reason for that which he's not going to come out publicly and say why and throw him under the bus, and why should he either?
