On this day.

Great to watch - but at least as good if you play the video with the volume up and your eyes shut tight (would be a better listen if it was 20 seconds longer though)

Someone who does not get the credit they deserve for their part in the build-up to that goal is Stockley. His chest down of the ball for Browne to pick up on is perfect. You also see that Browne following up just behind the targetman is in a position that ideally suits him. Just to cap it off Barkhuizen is also in the ideal position for his talents - not stuck way out wide but running into the penalty area onto a properly weighted through ball. In short three players in their proper positions enabled to play in the way that makes the most of their capabilities.

Stockley got immense credit for his performance that day...

Yes he did but he often doesn't. He obviously isn't in the class of Riis but Stockley is a lot better than he is given credit for and in the single striker role he is more effective than Maguire. He can also form a very effective strike partnership with Sinclair - something that we should have exploited more previously. How Riis and Sinclair might play together I don't know but I have a feeling that Riis and Maguire might work as a pairing.

Is he?

Riis has shown exactly what you need from a Championship no.9. Stockley is League One.

When he 1st came on in that game just before H/T he made very little difference.
Second half he was immense and possibly one of his best displays in a North End shirt, the Blackburn Central defenders could not handle him, he dominated and bullied them. 😄👍

Probably top end league one.
He has made a couple of good finishes and certainly changed the game against Rovers in that memorable second half.
Agree not a player who is consistent enough to push us to the next level and Riis looks to be a significant upgrade if he continues in the same vein.
That goal from Barkhuizen was an absolute joy both in quality and significance.

Yep the early sub of taking Gally off and putting him on changed the flow of the match and got them worried. Didn't he also win the penalty at Charlton the next week? Also scored v Huddersfield in last game before November 2019 break.

I actually think that's been one of the disappointments of last 12 months, Stocks not kicking on much to be at least effective plan B option bar the odd decent half like Sheff Weds away.

4 goals in last 12 months....which still isn't that much worse than the other striker options!

It shows how Neil has worked wonders imo, he’s gone the best part of 3 years without a proper mobile, strong, quick striker.

Before his hamstring issue Maguire certainly had more pace and was scoring more regularly. Agree (as we nearly all do) that we left if far too long to replace Hugill but perhaps now we can push on. Got to be a team effort though.
Edit - Intended as a reply to KW post but omitted to copy it in.

He often doesn't because more often than not he isnt good enough.

It isnt anything against the lad as he comes across as one of the most genuinely likeable members of the squad he just isnt good enough to consistently lead the line at this level.

He did win the penalty at Charlton. Put us top for about 30 hours.
Great finish but freeze it when stockley chests it and our u/16s would have scored defensive shambles or what. Hope they defend the same next time we meet them.
