PNE youth team thread: 2019-20 season.

I've got to say I wasnt surprised when Melle was released.....and would never have seen him as a CB.

He 'could' play very well but imo only when there was a crowd or a big match..... i.e. @ Deepdale.

he often strolled through matches I saw and didnt really put the workrate in - never very strong in the tackle - hence the surprise at him being a CB.

I could see him being a 'footballing' sweeper type CB but not a English head and tackle type..

Of the recent lads I'd like to see Jack Baxter tried in the Pearo role in 'bounce / cup games'....
Neither was I and agree with what you say about him. I'm surprised he's done so well.

I think that it proves you do develop in different ways at different times.

I just don't see the point of having a youth team if we simply let them go at 18 as no club in England has got players at 18 ready to play top level championship football. (the very odd exception before everyone jumps on the band wagon)

I thought Melle was a powerful runner, as was Anderton. Both are playing professionally now which means there might be something in it.

Melle has been in and out of the team at Waalwijk but is still only young and has time to develop. He might just go on to have the best career out of all of our recent academy graduates, especially bearing in mind as well that centre backs tend to develop a bit later.

Well we don't. We let the majority go, because that's a fact of life, but Earl, Baxter, O'Reilly and Walker are all pros now, presumably with enough potential to be considered worth that additional time to develop.

As a club, we don't have a development squad, so we rely on loaning them out to get them that experience to bridge that gap. It worked for Ben Davies.

Ben was probably the last to come through when we had the remnants of a development squad.... and it was only remnants but he would have been part of it as a scholar. IT was the likes of Bailey Wright; Danny Mayor; Jamie Proc etc who were in the development squad under Unsworth & Grezza after leaving the YT's that made the step up - at some level - in time....not all mind but a reasonable %.

Just as a few develop at a slower rate, many are great as kids and tail off as they hit adulthood.

Proper shame that but fully understand the reasoning
I know what Alex is saying but doesn't sit right with me.
The lads who have been released were all out on loan last season, I also heard Preston turned down loans on some of them for whatever reason earlier this year.
It can't be right we pay Nugent circa 10k a week, Ripley 5k a week, yet we allow youngsters who I guess are on 3-400 a week to simply leave.
If they were given the chance they would probably surprise people

If we truly had a "bankrolling" billionaire owner, we'd be using this Covid-19 crisis as an opportunity to reset and revamp our operations outside the first team, ready to embrace the new normal of limited lower-league loans - we'd commit to the 2nd year scholars who show promise, introduce a proper U23 squad, and expedite the planned (modest) Springfields improvements.

Instead - because we don't have any such "bankrolling" owner - we'll fire the kids off, cancel the improvements, and use the crisis as an excuse to cut as much spending as possible.

I absolutely agree with all you have said there.
The club is awash with poor signings and youngsters not getting opportunities.
Can't expect youngsters to improve if they are not training day in day out with the 1st team

Blackburn are a better run club than us.

Good luck to Ty, he has the ability and should develop faster at proper facilities and dedicated specialised coaching.

I think Dolan has just signed a 2 year deal with Rovers
Can't be right if this has happened.
Even people who are still asleep and unable to smell coffee must realise that our strategy as a club is all wrong.
The worrying thing for me is that if Walker, Baxter and OReilly hadn't by some chance signed contracts pre-covid then they would have been gone as well.
I understand they would be miles off being a regular in the 1st team at this stage but surely a club our size must have some kind of pathway.
Can we honestly say teams would not have taken Dolan and Armer on loan this season like Neil has said....what a load of bollox.
They along with the rest of the youth team were a number on a spreadsheet, out of contract who were simply deleted.
Incredible cash wasn't found to fund them this season whilst we splash money on Nugent for 2 years.

Spot on.False economy at it's best. Not just Nugent.Which up and coming kid is going to come to a club with no foresight or ambition? Rovers will be rubbing their hands at having got this player(not prospect)for nowt. If we can't keep players already here and settled then I don't fancy our chances in the transfer market. It could/should have been short term pain for long term gain.

Ty is a victim of the coronavirus. He was out on loan at Clitheroe and was playing well before the season was cut short. If he had managed to play well till the end of the season, I’m convinced PNE would have offered him a contract.

If Dolan's gone Blackburn could it be that we offered him a deal but he decided he'd rather go Blackburn? Just looking at facilities and the amount they invest in and value young players it seems pretty clear that they're the better club for a young player to be at.
