Preston Docks 1960's/70's

Cracking thread this one has turned into.

Regarding the boating, it would be lovely to see something like that on the Ribble again, though the Ribble can be seriously low at times during low tides / drier months - doubt it would have the required depth around the park to be able to sustain anything like this on a consistent basis.

Ha this is true, when we're down there early on a Saturday morning there's a guy wading in the river with a shovel and metal detector. It's only up to his knees.

New bridge finished and about 40/50yrs later.

Great photo. Think roundabout was there until the 1960's. There was a petrol station where Chorley Nissan now is and there were some public toilets as well. Broadgate cycles was on the left before it relocated to Hawksbury Drive in Penwortham.

On the docks I'd also heard DFS was moving next door into the old Mothercare, and a discount food retailer was replacing them.

Also the new Starbucks is close to completion in Morrisons car park.

I wondered what that new construction was. Also closed for good is the Chiquito's close to the cinema.

That pub hasn't been successful for a long time. Only did okay during the earliest days of it being The Waterfront.
Used to go to Baffitos quite a bit at lunchtimes, was always surprised how quiet it was given the little pocket of businesses around there. If that cluster of accountants / financial firms was in Manchester etc, imagine how busy a decent little bar/restaurant would be at lunchtimes.

It does feel like that whole docks area is undergoing a bit of change though. And the gym shut down too.

Didn't know the gym had gone! The Ribble Pilot seems to do quite well although it's nothing spectacular by any means.
As has been mentioned perhaps the whole area could do with a facelift.

I remember the roundabout as shown.

If you came onto it from Strand Road and turned right to go over the bridge it had a very steep camber, this meant that trucks who went a little too quickly tipped over, and quite often. As a kid news soon went round and everyone raced up there to scavenge what you could from the spilt loads.

Also there were public toilets on the corner, these were the first public toilets for coaches returning from Blackpool to Wigan and Liverpool etc, remember in those days coaches didn’t have toilets on, so the passengers used to spill out and sprint for the loos, at this point a friend of mine would release his rather large and fierce dog which would cause chaos 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 , the tricks of youth 🙄.

I was in Avenham Park yesterday - that bridge must definitely be the one outside the Conti. None of the others have red brick arches. The one between Miller & Avenham parks just has straight upright columns, completely different.
Fountain and direction of view suggest it’s Miller Park and the bridge next to the continental is to the right.

Here's a great set of videos from the BFI. Worth watching all of them when you've the time.

The films are generally from the first half of the last century and include for example...

A few clips of North End as long ago as 1901. Watch out for the referee in one clip, he's running round the pitch in his suit!
Sir Winston Churchill's visit to Preston after WWII.
Easter egg rolling on Avenham park from 1901.
General view from the town centre and the markets.
From 1936 Ribble busses tootling up and down Fishergate Hill.
And also check out the light from Preston Illuminations!

You shouldn't be disappointed. Enjoy, when you have time to kill (y)

Love watching these. Different world.

No mobiles, leggings, chavs or rapscallions..... Loved to have lived then.... Apart from the rickets, low life expectancy, cotton mills, impending world war and living on tripe.... 😁
