Ryan Ledson

Which is precisely why I was saying that Ledson should be that holding DM destroyer, and that slightly further forward it should be one of McCann or Whiteman.
Whiteman has literally always been played as our deepest midfielder, and in doing so, has become one our best players.

Saying it's between McCann and Whiteman for one shirt is baffling given they're completely different players.

I think the second half pressure was as much down to centre backs losing composure as much as Ledson.

I appreciate we aren’t passing it around at the back but it felt like at the start of the second half the back three were set in trying to clear the ball first time on every occasion and felt like it put a nervousness into the whole team.

IMO Whiteman and in particular, Whatmough, were necessary just to bring some much needed calm to the team.

He’s been decent to start the season Ledson but I think it’s invaluable having Whiteman in there.

It's horses for courses this season. Birmingham tend to play with tall athletic players who are direct and like to run with the ball. I think Whiteman is a yard off the pace at the moment and Ledson can be reckless when players run at him. Tough call. I hope Hughes, Browne and Keane are fit to start. I'm also hoping Laird, Dembele and the other 'touch and goes' are out. Over to the manager.

With the new signings, they are more going forward thinking players than we had last season, Whiteman is the choice

Ledson, as with most players, has his deficiencies. Ledson isn’t calm on the ball and often rushes when in possession which results in a high turnover of possession when he plays. Contrast this to Whiteman, for example, who is calm on the ball and likes to keep the ball. The opposing argument here is that Ledson provides a lot more bit in the midfield than Whiteman and hurries the opponents more.

The issue on Saturday with our overall ball retention was Browne not being at his best either - many reasons for this, an not offering himself for a short pass. This resulted in Ledson playing a blind ball over the top needlessly. Its also worth noting that Milly had 1 full session with the lads so they weren’t up to speed with each others games.

Ironically DJ ahead of a McCann/Ledson holding partnership would have given him his much needed freedom.

That said RE Browne, I thought he we were evidence worse when he wasn’t on the field and that’s with him being below standard so shows the off ball work he does.

Ledson simply isn’t as bad as people make out, it was his interception and quick ball into Milly that lead to goal number 2 on Saturday. He just needs to remain calm more often

exactly ; that attempted volleyed pass on the turn that went behind him was hideous . Whereas he keeps it simple and he contributes to Millar's goal
This ‘pass’ has attracted a lot of comments and criticism. It was no more ambitious than Potts magnificent ball to Millar for the first goal. The difference being Potts ball come off. Its the kind of ball a player/team attempts when it’s full of confidence and from that point of view, the reaction has been overly negative.
I’m not sure there’s a straight forward Ledson v Whiteman choice here either. There are two defensive midfield positions in the team and four players for those two roles.
What I am sure of is that when our form inevitably starts to slip, if he’s on the pitch, the finger of blame will be pointed at Ledson.

I have wanted Ledo to be a success since day one. He needs to look up before passing and cut out the Hollywood stuff. He tried to replicate Horses wonder pass that led to the first goal. His effort was more Weatherfield than Hollywood. I do think he us good to have in the squad, he seems to contribute greatly to a happy team spirit and appears to love being a North Ender.

I’m not a big fan of Ledson as a footballer but at this point I won’t be too disappointed if I see his name on the team sheet. He’s definitely been keeping it simple a lot more which is good, still tries the Hollywood ball every now and again though.
The pass he’s been criticised for on Saturday was absolutely the right thing to do at that time - if it had come off, we would have been in an excellent attacking position. Just a shame it was very poor execution!

I always think there is a big difference between doing the right thing and it not coming off and doing the wrong thing. As long as any player is trying to do the right thing they‘re generally ok by me.

Ledson has done a job this season but what frustrates me about Ledson is that he often marks space, leaving two of the box to pick up the opposition runners from midfield. That might be tactical, given how often it's happened, but along with the ball often being wasted (which the stats on this thread have highlighted) mean that if there's a toss up between the two, Whiteman would always be ahead of Ledson. Fbref have a good comparison of Ledson vs the rest of the league, and he's great at the dirty side (interceptions, blocks, clearances) but not so great on the passing and "playing" side of the role.

Signs of improvement at Stoke and on Saturday in particular in giving the ball simple, like his punchy pass to Osmajic for the 2nd goal but when you've a player in Whiteman waiting in the wings it's a matter of when, not if, he comes into the fore.

Both Ledson and Browne are on 3 YC's, long way to go to make the cut off for a 1 match ban for 5 yellows. It'll be a squad game in this busy part of the season and in particular in these batches of games between international breaks. The last three games of this particular batch will show us where we are really at, but that's for another thread.

With Whitman we become easier to play against I’m my opinion.

He takes the ball off the centre halves every time and we are easy to stop
Playing and resort to long ball.

It’s great we've strength in depth all over the park.

It was Potts getting abuse, the ledson, Woodburn . I feel Brady is next in line listening to groans on Saturday. I don’t really get it.

In all fairness within two minutes on Saturday Brady had gifted Plymouth a corner so I can see why fans groaned.

But he hasn’t played any games this season so I can also see why he was a bit rusty. I think Brady could be a big player for us this season. I think he is a decent option off the bench and can play on a number of positions.

Ledson mis kicked the ball and nearly face the ball away,?woodman spilled a cross. They all make mistakes

People only need to see Potts signing a new contract after the shit he got.
