Summer 2023 : Transfer Window Rumours and Discussion

Mentioned this a few times. We lack leaders all over the pitch. There’s nobody on that pitch who will pick up the team, get them going. Ched maybe but who knows what game time he will get this season if any. Browne isn’t a captain I’m afraid, if anything I think it hinders him.

Gone are the days when we had a Clarke/O’Neil/Welsh/Gregan etc
Oh for one of these!
I think AB is more suited to a Club Captain role than an on the pitch leader.
The question is who is suited to be Team Captain, apart from Woodman the only other Player who is probably a given on the Team sheet is Whiteman, and he allegedly doesn't get on with the Manager and/or could be leaving anyway.

People are talking a lot about Whatmough, but I have no idea what he offers really can't remember watching him particularly. Not that it would take a lot to get into our back 3, but what is he good at?
From a Wigan fan... asked if he can play in a back 4

"He did / can. But big reason for us playing 3 centre backs for the past 2 years was none of them had any pace. Him probably being the slowest of the 3. Great in the air, decent playing out but you'd need someone fast and tenacious alongside him. Plays RHS, doesn't like playing on the left...."

Sounds like a younger version of Bauer who can play a bit...

Sounds exactly like Lindsay.

Doesn't really sound like it solves many problems. The lack of pace of Lindsay is the root cause of many of our tactical problems. Get someone more mobile there and immediately we're 10-20 yards further up the pitch and not shitting ourselves every time we lose the ball.

That, would it, be the Lindsay with the third highest number of clearances per game in the Championship last season?

One of the benefits of playing three at the back is it gives you an opportunity to play players at centre back who are not your traditional, 6"3 centre backs.

Sunderland last year quite often playing with O'Nein at centre back, Luton played with Osho (played as a right back and midfielder in the past) and Swansea played Manning and Naughton at centre back. Doesn't feel like we've taken advantage of this at all and we've gone more down the traditional centre back route and finding one of them who is mobile enough and good enough on the ball is hard to find.

Up the Toffees, like London buses. It’s been said all along it’ll only happen once Everton sign a striker so let’s see how these next few days play out…

Yep, great in the air and at desperate last ditch defending and not a lot else.

The time and space he needs to give himself to compensate for his lack of mobility and the protection he needs from fast runners in the form of a deeper central midfield is a huge tactical weakness in my opinion and easy to exploit if you have some pace to go up against him.

Worse, we are unprepared to take risks in possession further forward because the consequences of giving the ball away are high. (see Swansea away last season for example).

Nixon’s said he expects one of the interested clubs to go close to the £1m fee for Cannon by the end of the week, he will have a say where he goes but Everton will have a bigger say when it comes to who’s paying the closest to what they want

He said we were one of the only ones willing to go close.

We converted 2 left backs into LCBs.

I made the slightly off the wall suggestion last year of trying to play Whiteman there...

Just had a look on the Sunderland forum and a poster has said ‘he’ll be in this week unless someone offers them more for the loan fee.’ Seems like they aren’t sure on paying the full fee either

Lowe is part of the shit show. It's his recruitment company, it's his training methods, it's his 'brand,' it's him who has fallen out with players past and present etc.

He's not fully to blame though, which is why I also want Ridsdale gone. I would like a more modern Director of Football, and a coach from the Premier League wanting to make the step up to Head Coach. Someone who can make us into a hard working, high fitness level side, who have the tactical nous to be flexible in our formation and style of play.

Or someone like Lee Carsley from England Under 21s. I would have liked Ian Foster but he's gone to be assistant manager with Gerrard.
Best post I've seen in ages. Nail on the head.

1) We matched the Archer fee last season and we will do this time, too.
2) Tom obviously enjoyed / enjoys it here and if he has a say should all fees be matched...
3) The #28 shirt has been made vacant, you'd suspect, for a certain reason.
4) Whilst I have had no info since last Monday, I'm still relaxed about the whole situation.
