Ashton Park sports pitches

It was still going to be green, the actual buildings were only going to cover a small part of the park, the rest would have been football pitches, according to that report on blog Preston, only 15% of the park would have been built on
UCLAN is a privately owned facility, a publicly owned one would have been good for the community teams to have used

There are leisure centres?

Nothing wrong with Penny Home and a bit of cinder rash.

Add on the traffic and associated detritus light pollution and noise Im thoroughly delighted it has been shelved.

And I live nowhere near Ashton.

Shame its been cancelled, the city could do with a decent community facility like that, hopefully they can find somewhere else for it where the locals aren't so against it, there must be other viable locations for it
It’s financial escalation that has put the brakes on it, not the residents. They will however try and put the blame on the locals but it still got passed even with the moaning locals.

I used to live near a similar facility when i lived in Manchester, and i never once experienced noise or light pollutiuon.
During the day it was used by schools and students, you'd get a few sunday league teams in the evening and once a week there was a 5 a side tournament that was always finished by about 9 or 10pm so didnt go on too late, there was more noise and light pollution from the local shops and takeaways.
There was a park adjacent to it, which you wouldnt wander into after dark as you'd likely get mugged, but you could safely wander around the football pitches so it also added a safe place for people to walk after dark

Fantastic that this monstrosity has been shit canned. If you know the area you know the destruction it would have done to a thriving wildlife habitat, home to rabbits, squirrels, birds, foxes, owls, bats and a whole bunch of different flowers and trees.

Go and build your football pitches elsewhere you dorks.

There’s a lack of all weather facilities in Preston. The last season is the worst I’ve ever known for kids football being called off, my sons team played 8 games all season and we couldn’t find an artificial pitch as some are block booked for the season. Seems the money has gone so there’s no chance of it happening but Penwortham Holme would be a good option for a couple of all weather pitches. Close to the centre easily accessible etc.

They really didn’t want the rubber crumb pitches . But are still adamant PNE were behind it all with Rawlinson in their back pocket. Seethe comments below.

I wonder how Preston North End feel about the councils debacle.
After Martyn Rawlinson promised his buddy Peter Ridsdale the Ashton park hub for his academy, Rizzi withdrew the plans they had passed to build their academy on Ingol golf club, coincidentally on the very day Ashton park went live on the planning portal in December.
If North end had done the ethical thing instead of hitching a free ride their building could be 2/3 built by now.
No category 2 status for them anytime soon 🤣🤣

If PNE want to build a category 2 academy then they should buy their own land instead of trying to steal a public park off the people of Preston

the fact that they were in support of the project and suddenly a one story pavilion went to two stories with classrooms. The proposed programme for the pitches was also published with most of the times taken up by PNE. You are probably right they weren’t interested.

PNE are shuffling the financial books” just in case “anyone would be interested in buying in.Prior to that 50 million of debt was moved around to make the club more attractive to buyers. PNE are not in a position to support a Cat 2 FA Academy and the teams in the community are less interested than claimed. They couldn’t make it pay.

Is there any truth in the stuff above?

Wasn't it the community side of north end that was going to use it rather than the actual playing side. In which case it would just be like any other charity of local sports team using it.

This is what I’m lead to believe but you try telling them that. It’s PNEs category 2 academy on the cheap apparently. I’m sure some comments that have been made could be seen as libellous.

An absolute disaster for grassroots football. Particularly the open age game, there is a huge shortage of 11 a side football pitches in the area and this facility could've given suitable homes to 12-14 clubs.

While I understand some of the ecological arguments, as a manager of a Sunday League football team myself, I see this as a massive blow to the sustained future of grassroots football in the city.

It would help if the drainage on the pitches that are available is sorted so that they become playable between November and February, rather than just continuously waterlogged for 4 months.

I don’t know where they keep getting this PNE link from, there is absolutely no link between PNE and this development other than the community team (a separate charitable organisation) would use the pitches

I think Ashton Park was once sounded out as a location for a dome for the academy, this idea was quickly rebuffed but the PNE link remained in the consciousness of some people.
