Surely the council and university can come together to re-open 53 degrees, at least then therell be something in the city for small and mid iszed gigs while they work out what to do with the guild hall or any potential new venues

I believe part of the issue with 53 was it was affected by "radius clauses" where an act playing at a venue like Warehouse Project couldn't play within a certain radius of the venue / within a certain time-frame. So basically the promotors at 53 would have to try and get in before one of the larger Manchester/Liverpool venues to try and get the acts, hope that they would play for less money and hope they had no contract clauses. When you're up against someone like Live Nation then I suppose it becomes close to impossible.

I don't know the full ins and outs of it but that's the general story I know of.

How many millions do the people of Preston spend yearly attending gigs and eating out in both Liverpool and Manchester? Millions that could and should be spent in OUR city.

Get a decent 5k venue sorted out.

This way, you can host the bands that would play Manc Academy / Ritz (1500 their capacities) and those that have outgrown both venues thus taking the next stage capacity wise.

You have to spend initially to reap the longer term rewards. Don't waste the gift of 2024 like PC (or whoever) wasted the gift of 2007.

Lastly, why oh why do we need another cinema complex in the city? Isn't 2 enough? This was a golden chance to have created said 5k venue.

Yeah would have been an ideal space for a new events venue, seen as the council don't seem to be interested in doing anything with the guild hall apart from opening a small room for tacky tribute acts.

This new complex just seems to be very similar to the flower bowl at Barton grange, just on a bigger scale.

A venue should be included in the plans to replace the Fishergate Centre, right next to the train station.

Similarly, if that canal basin idea ever takes off, it could include a space similar to Castlefield Bowl.

Neither will happen like.

Good points , although Preston probably needs a 2500 capacity venue rather than a 5000 one .
Manchester has the Apollo (capacity 3500) then nothing until the MEN (21k) followed by Co-op (23.5k)

There is nothing in between for bands needing to bridge that gap.

5k is where Preston should come in.

But we won't because the city leaders, after the initial weekend of joy, will again submerge into the apathy of post 2007.

Not just bands.

Comedy is non existent in Preston.

I watched Sean Lock at the guild hall about 10 or 15 years ago, and the venue was half empty, couldnt understand why there were so many empty seats for a big name comedian, maybe it hadnt been marketed well enough, or is there just not the demand for it in Preston?

Largely agree but I'm supportive of the new cinema development. However, it needs to be supplemented by a new medium-sized venue in order to really pull the crowds in.

Retail is dying on its arse and this is a golden opportunity for Preston to reinvent itself.

Sadly, I fear it will be pissed up the wall like last time.

The new cricket ground at Farington will hold about 5000 people when built

If you removed the retail parks which are too close to the town centre(Deepdale and the capitol Centre) you would probably find retail in the town centre would pick up.
You would also have two very developable large area close to the centre for other uses!
No thought has ever gone into planning of Central Lancashire in Decades

I think we all need to realise, including retailers, that physical retailing is dying on its feet and theres one cause, we are all using it to post on here. The internet.

I can research products i need, read usr reviews, do a search for the best prices/availability etc without having to trail around shops and having somebody not wanting me to leave until Ive bought it.

Besides I dont vape, smoke, gamble and I can only eat one meal at a time so the majority of retail outlets. im town centres, dont hold much attraction for me.

Even the out of town outlets, are becoming a pain in the arse, with draconian parking restrictions, so many people are getting caught out, unwittingly, by going for a breakfast in the morning and then returning later to do some shopping.

80 quid charge to a company that doesnt do anything to earn the obscene amounts they make from the public.

Plus online you can order your discreet items like Tenaman, suppositories and butt plugs for the older/slacker gentleman.

Just replace the Fishergate Centre with a replica of The Piece Hall at Halifax and be done with it. Great gig venue

Issue with a large standalone venue is what do you do for the 300+ days a year it is unused? Footfall wise, Preston isn't Manchester and doesn't have the music scene that a big city has (with great smaller venues like Night & Day for example)

Piece Hall at Halifax is unique in that it's filled with largely independent retail/hospitality units, Christmas markets in the winter and used as a music venue during the summer months (and is a stunning piece of architecture as well)

There's probably the appetite for an alternative to Lytham but getting the right venue, right acts and it to be sustainable are huge questions, and trusting PCC to not make a complete hash of it.

Places like the Ritz in Manchester are often used as a nightclub on the nights when there's no gig, with Tokyo Joes burning down, there isn't really a big club in the town anymore either (although its been years since i last went to a nightclub so don't really know what the scene is like in Preston these days). There are other uses for larger venues other than just the gigs that mean they can be used all year round

We’re in a right fkin state.

No Guild Hall
No 53 Degrees
No Mill
No Lamb
Tokes raized to the ground

Just the Ferret

Shambles.

We do have The Conti and Playhouse Theatre plus Guild Ale House & The Orchard regularly host gigs but it's still not enough.

We desperately need a medium sized venue to plug the gap.
