Matchday Thread Cardiff City v PNE -10/02/24 - KO:3PM - Championship

Presumably to do with the constant periods of muscle relaxation involved in football followed by sudden fast contraction when sprinting

Whereas long distance runners have a constant steady contraction period
In the past the big objection to sin bins in football was just that, sat out for 10 minutes then back to match action, brains of a rocking horse putting this on the agenda.

Personally, I’m not sure if 10 minutes is long enough to really stiffen up the muscles. There is very little visible warming up after the half time break - so a sin-binned player should be able to warm up in similar way to the way every player warms up for the second half of every match.

For some of the lads I played with, that was a last deep drag on a fag, a snot rocket and a jog into position.

And oranges at half-time!

Yes, they seem to manage a sin binning just fine in rugby.

I am happy to see a sin-bin trial. My biggest concern is whether we just get to see 10 minutes of negative time wasting- but I get the impression that a sin-binning doesn’t detract from the spectacle in Rugby Union. I think a player-down is more of a disadvantage in RU and usually a try is scored. A bit easier to get 9 players defending in footy.

Just my opinion but I think it’s nonesense. There are too many subjective decisions in the first place so what will count as a ‘blue card’

The other thing is they need to get their house in order before they introduce new things. Watched the highlights of the Luton c shef united game other night. Two outrageous hand ball decisions which resulted in pens. You can’t introduce new things like sin bins when VAR is in such a state.

Ben Pearson does not like Blue Cards.

Or any colour of card for that matter!

The 14 man side will certainly slow the set pieces down in rugby.

Will the footy ref add on wasted time to the 10 minutes or add on time to the end of the half??

If it cuts out dissent and/or managed to reduce red cards then great but footy seems to be struggling with new laws and the implementation of them these days….

Fair comment. You’re right that they need to get sorted before introducing anything new- but I remain attracted to the idea being trialled at the appropriate time.

Dump VAR and then let the referees referee - that would be my first step!

Likewise absolute nonsense . It’s a simple game . Which they are trying to make difficult

It's just IFAB coming up with something to justify its existence. There are already sanctions in place for the offences that they are talking about introducing it for.

Well, yes, there are already sanctions that the ref can impose. But the point is that we arguably may need a third option!

At the moment, these cynical fouls (taking a tactical yellow) are very frustrating for fans, managers and players. But at the moment the deterrent of a yellow is clearly insufficient to stop players tactically choosing to foul an opponent who is bursting through. A yellow is usually inconsequential to the match (apart from stopping goals!).
So if you think this is just ifab pointlessly piddling about, then it seems you are either happy with the current situation of yellow cards for those cynical offences- or you want to see red cards dished out for offences like a player grabbing the shirt of a player on the half way line, even when the chance of the break-away leading to a goal is not particularly high. If that happens in the first half, it kind of kills the game.

I am definitely not convinced the blue card would be a great solution (for a start, I would have chosen orange!) but it feels like something that should be tried. It’s a far smaller change than the introduction of var was.
