Confirmed Ched Evans - Serious Medical Condition

Bloke is a machine, not many players I'd back to come through an injury like this, but Ched is one.

This really good news for Ched and for the club after a few pretty grim weeks.

Hope he has a great rehab during the summer, been a massive miss.

Not his biggest fan but this would help massively if we see the form from the second half of the season and not the first.
Still think he'd be bloody stupid to risk his health unless he was given as close to a guarantee you can get that he'll be safe to play the way he always has

I doubt he'll be back, and it's probably unwise for him to try, but can understand why he has to maintain that he will.

Just leaves us a striker short all next season IMO, because we won't fund 4 strikers + Evans.

The way Ched plays that has to be a concern but I am sure it is something he will discuss at length with his family and the medical staff.

The issue is we just don't know what level he can sustain if he does get back to playing.

With Riis out and no word for how much longer we currently have no fit professional strikers (albeit the young lads) on our books.

I am sure we will match anyone for some loans though.....

Quite an astonishing situation really, could it possibly all be posturing for insurance reasons?
Dread to think the next time we can't bail ourselves out with an helluva good January loan striker..

I know that everyone at the Club wants to be supportive of Ched in his recovery from this injury, but there is no way that we should be encouraging him to carry on playing.

This isn't a leg break or an acl. The surgeon has had to build a titanium cage around his spinal column in his neck. If this doesn't work he could end up disabled for the rest of his life, for the sake of one more part season at this level.

How can a Club risk a player like this? "We'll support Ched in what he wants to do" is an understandable emotional response, but somebody has to stand up and be the adult in the room.

We should have told him that we would be seeking the insurance payout for the remainder of his contract, that he should retire from playing and take up the alleged coaching offer from Fleetwood.

I’m no medic. I fully agree with your sentiment though.

They were saying that Americans Footballers sometimes get this injury. Do we know how often they play again? And if so, what are the outcomes? I only say this because the medics might be able to make good judgements about how the op and the rehab has gone.

I know it is not quite the same level of risk but who would have expected Andy Murray to have been able to play at such a level again. They must have judged that he was good to go.

Nobody is smashing into Andy Murray to win a 50/50 header, in fairness. It's not that he can't be fit. It's that he plays a high impact position and neck damage is life changing.

Someone previously posted that the 1st opinion was for him to retire, but Ched sought a 2nd opinion and that consultant made reference to the titanium cage option and american football players. Obviously Ched went with the 2nd opinion as it was what he wanted to hear. Maybe he feels cheated after losing part of his career to a jail sentence and now this.

great news - hope hes okay and back to the player he was prior to getting injured, a true warrior

If he decides to play on following the surgery it will be as a result of some serious conversations with the medical experts and of course the surgeon involved and his family.
Whatever his decision it is his to make, as long as the advice received supports his aims and has been fully discussed with the club doctors etc.
We have certainly missed him in recent games.

I had the same surgery 10 years ago on the nhs. Albeit lower down my back . TLIF surgery it’s called. I have the same job now as I had before the surgery . But it took me 7 years to get back to some normality . Although I have nerve issues which will never go . He won’t know the full extent of his injury for a while yet I’d say .

Great news. Hope his re-hab goes well too.

As much as I’d love to see him play for us again next season he has to consider his health for the long term, 50 years not just the next 2 or 3. Not that he needs any of us to tell him that obviously.

As a previous poster said this isn’t just a broken leg or ACL and the consequences of a further neck injury don’t bear thinking about. And let’s face it a big part of his game is all those hard bruising physical battles.

Good luck from me though whatever he chooses to do.

Players player of the year says it all. Fans hero too.

I'm not sure how these things work but surely some Doctor has got to declare him fit to return to professional football ? Thats a big call for them to make but if they do, they must be confident in it. Without it the club wont be able to play him - it simply cant be Cheds decison alone?

I don't know if they do but maybe you should have some sort of medical fit to play certificate.
In Boxing i think you have to be certified fit to Box, maybe with the sort of injury he has had something similar should be in place.
Nobody wants to see a serious injury to a Player that could have been averted.
They stop play now all the time during games to check on (Even minor) head injuries, it would be inadvisable to go into a match with a reasonable chance of such-like happening again.
It might be difficult for him, he obviously wants to prolong his career having missed his prime years, but as @ meldrews ghost said, someone has to be the adult in the room and advise him accordingly.
edit
Just read chorleythehords post, similar first sentence!

Really wish Ched well in his recovery, but it sounds like one hell of a decision to make. As Macctown said, it took him seven years to get back to some normality. So the best way for Ched to stay in football, would be to go into a coaching roll. The final decision is his and his family's, but I wish him a quick recovery.

Sorry to hear that @macctownpne. Wishing you all the best for the future.

I had a minor neck injury over 35 years ago with damage to a disc. It gave me a lot of grief for over 10 years. I didn't have surgery, though I was told it might be needed in the future. I underwent a "manipulation" under full anaesthetic. It helped a lot and though I still have problems from time to time, they're nothing like as bad as they were.
