I am doing a academic writing on former forgotten players and the how it effects their lives, pre and post football.

I can think of a select few such as Simon Whaley or Paul McKenna, but ideally want something that’s really going to grab the readers attention.

Please can anyone remind me of former forgotten players and what has become of them?

The more obscure and stranger the situation, the better as I am trying to really trying to find out the working lives of footballers, and how much of a short career it is.

I suppose it depends what you want to write about.

Stuart Baxter, played 40 or so times. Ended up abroad, nearly became an Australian international and then had a superb managerial career. Also sadly lost his brother, Mick, who was a fantastic centre half.

You’ve also got other players who went on to careers in other sectors - maybe Graham Shaw, Colin Murdock, Graham Houston. Mike Elwiss became a milkman and married the chairman’s daughter I think. Players whose careers finished early due to injury - Ryan Kidd and Ricky Thomson (what a player he would have been) as examples.

If Whaley is your benchmark because he went from burning £20 notes in Yum Yums whilst being linked with a £2 million move to Middlesbrough to playing in the West Lancs league - where some players pay subs of £20 a game to play then Keith Tracey would be a good option.

Both of your examples, 'made it, to a degree' certainly Mckenna did.
Both made decent money, one of which may have wasted it!
Your study needs to concentrate on the nearly men.
The ones who might have had a career and earned a good wedge, but it just didn't quite happen.
Of course those are not the ones we as average fans remember.
You will need to do a bit more research than asking the online forum.
A PNE historian like ian Rigby or @ 'Budgie Rustler would be the type of person to ask!

Yep - not sure the OP is actually that clear of his remit.

Always thought Stuart Ripley was an interesting one in terms of an after football career - he never played for us himself but has a tenuous link to PNE as he's Connor Ripley's dad.

When he finished playing he went to UCLAN and qualified as a solicitor and now works for the FA on their judicial panel.

Just adding to this

You also have players who have careers who ended early due to personal struggles such as Keith Treacy and players who ended due to other health reasons such as Nick Anderton or ones who ended their career early for other reasons like Will Hayhurst

Not lately but a while ago, Graham Atkinson was working at Leyland Trucks,
Graham Houston was a sergeant in Preston police,
And Brett Ormerod & I think an ex Lashers player was delivering parcels for DPD.

The last time I saw Simon Whaley play was for Chorley against AFC Fylde. He was subbed after about an hour.

Once on the line whilst he was playing for Eagley in the West lancs at Garstang,
not the nicest of blokes towards officials!
Bit of an ego, always thought he could/should have done better with regards to his game.
