Forgotten Preston players.

I guess my point was that I never thought Nugent was as good a player as was made out, even at Championship level. He didn't have the ability to lead the line and be the difference maker, for a side going for promotion. I think top half Championship, was his absolute peak level. Whereas others see him as a very good player at this level, I think he was much closer to average than a top top player.

So in 13/14 when Leicester topped the Championship table with 102 points and he was top scorer with 20 league goals (more than Vardy)…??

At the time he was well worth a prem move. Think Sunderland were in for him at the time so perhaps would've been better for him there but then again Roy Keane was one of those managers who seemed to sign 4-5 new strikers every summer for 50m. They signed Michael Chopra instead who had a similar career to Nuge, very prolific in the championship but couldn't quite step up to the prem, Cameron Jerome another.

But that was my previous point, he excelled because he wasn't the 'Main man'. He played second fiddle to Vardy all season hence he was played as a number 10. With players like Vardy, Mahrez, Knockaert, Wood, Drinkwater....He looked a significantly better player than he was. When he was the 'Main Man' of a side, he didn't look anywhere near the player of that Season.

His career backs that up, zero promotions apart from when playing behind one of the countries greatest ever strikers and alongside one of the most successful wide men our game has seen.

Bollocks.

You said he couldn’t be the difference maker for a side going for promotion.

He was literally the top scorer for a team that won the league.

That’s the lead fiddle.

Now please go away until Leicester are in our league again ie next season (unless PNE go up).

He played 10 more games than Vardy and scored six more goals, so I don't think that's playing second fiddle.

Vardy wasn't the striker he went on to become at that point, and even at his peak saying he's one of the countries greatest ever strikers is way overboard.

Mahrez joined in January and played 19 games so I doubt it was all down to him.

Anyone who gets promoted does it as part of a good team, so you can't write off his promotion cause he did too.

Nugent was a top end Championship player who was never quite up to the Premier League

When Vardy is called ‘one of the countries greatest ever strikers’ and (I presume, because I had to think hard about who it was) Mahrez is called ‘one of the most successful wide men our game has seen’, I tend to think there’s not much in this opinion.

Tom Finney, Stan Matthews, George Best, and Riyad Mahrez. Yep. Definitely the most successful wide men our game has seen.

Wasn't Nuge keeping Harry Kane out that season.....

I think another Nugent problem going to Portsmouth was Harry Redknapp wasn't really keen on signing him for whatever reason. I can remember after his 2-3 game Redknapp giving an interview saying he could move on if he wanted!

He stayed and then became more of a regular in future seasons. Then went to Burnley and had a decent scoring record under Owen Coyle for 5-6 months.

I would have sworn we had a reserve goalie maybe in Nobby Styles days, called either peter or Kevin Kilner. But googling suggests no one called Kilner has ever played for PNE. Can anyone think who I might be thinking of?

Is it Peter Litchfield?

Not done a deep dive but at first glance he looks like the closest match as he's from around that time (1979-1984), a goalkeeper and called Peter

Nice try thanks - but definitely not PL. Definitely someone who was pretty much permanent understudy to a regular keeper. I would be surprised if “Kilner” made even 2 appearances… but probably 50+ Central League appearances.

John Kilner was the reserve goalkeeper you are probably thinking of,he never played a league game for North End.
He left and went onto play for Halifax Town where he made over 100 league appearances.
Peter Litchfield was signed a little later from Droylsden I think, Peter went on to replace Roy Tunks as our 1st team keeper.👍
