It is time to dig out those bowler hats and pin striped suits because the North End Gentry are returning for the away trip to Brentford on the 16th March 2012.

The Return of the Gentry is organised by the Preston Supporters Group (supported by PNE-Online) and is in memory of any Preston North End follower or player who may have passed away in the last 12 months.

The Gentry term was first used by third division championship winning manager Alan Ball Snr in the early 1970s stating to the Press after a game that "Preston fans are the best, they're the gentry".

This inspired a number of PNE fans to don bowler hats and even pin stripe suits at Deepdale.

In 2005 PSG arranged the "Return of the Gentry" in memory of John Tracey, a member of the original PNE Gentry who sadly passed away. This was a massive success and even saw North End's players wearing the famed bowler hats on the pitch.

In 2008 with the support of PNE-Online and other supporters groups, PSG decided to make it an annual event for all North End fans and the people of Preston to remember anyone they may have lost during that season/year.

The Return of The Gentry is heading back to London for the trip to Brentford as these have often proved to be the most enjoyable trips on the calender. This is also one of only two grounds with terracing which we feel will add to the enjoyment of the day.

Preston Supporters Group with the support of PNEONLINE will be pulling out all the stops to make this another great day in the PNE fans' calendar. However it will not be a success without your support, so please get out your bowlers, pinstripes, bow ties and lets once again show London town once again that “The Gentry” are a cut above everyone else.

Whilst enjoying ourselves on this momentous day let’s not forget the reason for doing so. You can leave the names of your loved ones and friends or your stories on our memories page.. This helps us all to remember everyone from the PNE 'family' who are no longer with us.

If you would like to read more about 'The Gentry', keep checking PNE-ONLINE or The PSG Website

You can also follow The Gentry on @pnegentry or join our North End Facebook Group

Post your dedications, tributes and memories here.

Thank you, Well happy with this, I will try and secure some Bowler Hats. R.I.P the lost North Ender fans and Players.

Is the fact there's a pub on every corner of Griffin Park just a coincidence in this game being chosen? 🙂

Traintickets booked for four of us. Looking forward to this day out. First away league game of the season, possibly the only one as I was saving my passes for Crewe Carlisle and shed utd at the end with play offs in mind. Ah well Crewe and Carlisle should come round again.

While it has worked out well for me a fixture at the back end of the season within 120 miles is more manageable for most and may be worth considering for next season.

I understand people who may have preferred a more local match. However the last three Gentry Days have been Newcastle, Hull, and Sheff Wed. All a relativity short distance away from Preston.

When planning The Gentry we also have to take many things into consideration such as the policing etc.

The Return of the Gentry started at QPR and in my personal opinion the best ones have all been in London and many supporters have also stated this to us.

That said we will bare that in mind for next year.

I'm very happy because I'll be in London at 16th March for the match vs Brentford and I'm proud to be with North End Fans in the day of the Return of the Gentry!!

4 of us stopping over at mates relations was going before it was announced that it was gentry day just makes it that bit special UTW

Great choice. It was the best away game last season and even won £180 on a footie accumulator on the day. Fans of the week on Soccer AM would be a fitting tribute. Can't wait.

A long way to go which might keep a lot of fans away but I will be making a effort I think just because its gentry day...

It's pointless having gentry day as it is at the moment, never mind in London. No one will turn out. Look at the attendence to the Sheff Wed game away, pathetic. IMHO should have been Carlisle or Sheff U away. Disappointed, not travelling half way across the country to watch North End at the moment I'm afraid.

To be honest a weekend in london sounds better than tuesday night in carlisle.

Neither of the matches you mention are viable.

We try to have The Gentry at places welcoming enough for supporters with bowlers etc to mingle in local pubs, clubs etc which is not possible at either club. We have to consider the "home" reaction to it, something again rules some clubs out.The Police views are also taken into account.

Also please bare in mind we do have fans across the country that follow us away from home. Like I have said the last three Gentry Days have been quite close.

One in London after four years is hardly unreasonable.

It is also much more than football, so matter how crap we might be on the pitch I don't want us to forget what The Genrty is about, clearly you have!

When I see whining posts like yours I wonder why I bother!

You bother because its worthwhile.

As I posted initially I will be attending but raised the geography issue on behalf of others.

As is always the case there is far more to organising any event than meets the eye of the participants.

I have in the past organised a few coaches to away games and learned very quickly you can't please all the people all the time. I even took the blame for results!

Carlisle is on a Saturday this year but for all the reasons you have to consider the worst option by some way despite geographically being a good option.

Look forward to seeing a thousand whites at brentford.

Keep up the good work.

Keep up the good work, no matter where u pick someone will be unhappy, After meeting Liverpool white going to Newcastle, I always make sure I go to the Gentry game. You could of said Plymouth or Doncaster some of us would still go.
