Hiking/Fell Walking

Aye. A couple of scoops will be on the agenda afterwards.

Spent years as a Wainwright bagger and managed to tick off all 214 of them. Plus near enough every pub in the Lakes...

Spent a hazy NYE in the Horse & Farrier, and camped round the back in a delirious fever of goretex and guy-ropes

I'm not an ale drinker but will always try to sample a couple when I'm in the Lakes.

Didn't bother taking many pictures of Blencathra and Skiddaw, couldn't see a thing on top of either peak and the winds were brutal.

Nah, would have been completely stupid with those winds, I was almost knocked off balance on flat ground in some parts.

Closest I ever came to death - sharp edge, in the ice, in February, many moons ago. Foot slipped and my arse hasn't stopped twitching, 20 years later.

Yeah, I wouldn't tackle it unless the conditions are perfect. Sketchier than Striding Edge.

I've done Crib Goch, but again, the conditions couldn't have been better.

God, I've also done crib goch in the ice too. Mental really. I've never been a climber or done any real rope stuff, but crawled every inch of the Lakes & Wales. But sometimes you get a bit too complacent.

I'll put that on my headstone.....

I'm not much of a scrambler but have done a fair few, Helvellyn is fun when it's dry.

Don't think i'd attempt any in the ice, not a fan of heights at the best of times.

Did Crib Goch at Snowdon on Saturday, those narrow bits are fucking horrible. Think it was an 11 mile loop all in, wouldn't recommend it in that heat, but the views are unreal.

Hi SF. Your photos are no longer working but I have seen plenty. Do you mind please trying to explain the level of real danger you felt on Crib Goch. I am trying to assess a longish route which includes that very scary-looking stretch.
I am not a regular in the mountains but not a complete novice up there. However, this would be pushing new boundaries for me. So any account or advice would be welcome. This YouTube video doesn’t do much for my confidence!! (the video between 5:00 and 10:00 gives a pretty good flavour)

It's not really dangerous when it's dry, in fact it can be a little tedious at parts as it can get very busy and you can be stuck behind a lot of people.

I don't think it'd be too bad in the rain either, but I wouldn't do it if it was icy.

There are points where most people shuffle along with their legs dangling over either side. You can scramble down the side though but it depends on your confidence and the conditions. It's very steep and if you slip, you could definitely die, so better to play it safe.

The videos do make it look worse than it is with the daft fishbowl lens.

Thanks for the feedback. That last line is particularly useful.

Did Clougha Pike, Grit Fell, and Ward's Stone in Bowland this morning, it's a good one. Less than half an hour from Preston, can't complain at all.

Actually got sun burnt in England, in late September, couldn't feel it with the wind.
