Not Alf Garnett types at all.

Alf Garnett is a much maligned character - he was opinionated but not otherwise more objectionable than a lot of supposedly more refined individuals. But the actor who played him - actually a North London Arsenal supporter - was an unpleasant piece of work.

Me and my wife were travelling to London following the defeat at Cardiff. We stopped at a service area along the way. Oh boy, what a bunch of tossers they were. Gave us a load of aggressive ner, ner, n ner, ner type of grief. Not very gracious in victory at all. I have disliked them with a passion ever since.
Same happened to me Roy…..

Outside the ground and some cocky bastard came right up to my face and said “ I hope you enjoyed your day out , ya Northern wanker !! “

I already hated them , but my hate intensified after that incident…….

Christ. I also thought they were as graceless as any opposition fans I can remember but do we really need to revisit this every time West Ham are mentioned? Tedious and small time. I couldn’t give a shit about them or their fans now personally

Wow, after the game we travelled to London and had the total opposite experience, very respectful and consoling and we must have seen about 50 of them and not one nasty or rude.

Alf Garnett as a character was supposed to be the one you were laughing at, written deliberately that way. I remember Marigold (I think that was his name) always getting the better of him in the later series - the actor who played him is now a major star in America incidentally.

Increasingly overwritten as the character developed a sort of perverse grandeur despite the efforts of both the writer and actor to turn him into a sort of monster.

I'm pleased for you Joan, unfortunately, we had the opposite experience. I know every club has it's unsavoury element and I'm not labelling them all with the same "tag", it's just very difficult to like the club after such an unpleasant episode.

Russell Brand, Rylan Neal , Danny Dyer and James Corden , say no more……

I know Roy and I agree and I’m sorry you and Ando had the experiences you did. I wish you had met those West Ham fans and friends I know instead of the brain dead element you both encountered.

Absolutely they do. The worst encounter I ever had was with Wigan fans.
I used to work on a building site in Wigan many years ago, Joan. They really do hate us. Can't prove it, but I think it was them who christened us 'nob end' which when I first heard it, knew it would stick (because it's such a fiendishly simple/clever p*ss take) the bar stewards.
