January 2025 - Transfer Window Rumours and Discussion

They do relatively well in their defensive actions and duels for the most part, but due to how we play/played, especially last season, you'd see the likes of Storey and Lindsay high up for tackles and interceptions, blocks etc because we'd invite the pressure.

The main issue with the defence is it's slow and none of them are any good on the ball. Either bringing the ball forward or passing. Potentially one of the worst in the league in terms of defender quality for ball progression.

Another issue is just switching off. Too many times they're ball watching when a shots been hit or a cross and there's an opposition with no one around them. Plus having a GK who isn't a good shot stopper and can't command his area.

But apart from all that our defence is good and our defenders are valuable 😂

I was suprised to see there are only 5 clubs with more clean sheets than ourselves this season

I don't think the problem is the defence, it's whats happening in front of them, not too sure about these stats ,but doesn't look to bad to me . unless i'm missing something.

I don't disagree there are problems ahead of them, we've lacked creativity for a long time for example, however we shouldn't treat defence in isolation.

Take that data for example, it shows the entire defensive output of the team, so it includes the numbers from midfielders and strikers too. Similarly we need to look at what the defenders contribute to our attack.

Moreover, it's worth noting that the problem with a lot of defensive stats is that they often don't tell you much other than you didn't have the ball. If you don't have the ball, you're more than likely to be putting in more tackles and attempting more interceptions. We about midtable on a lot of defensive stats (10th for xG conceded, 16th for successful tackles, 11th for clearances per match) and we're 14th for possession.

Where we lack defensively is mobility and they also lack the ability to play the ball. We're about 19th for accurate passes per game. The only passing stat we stand out is number of accurate long balls per game as we are first, but if you join that with the fact we're 19th for winning possession in the final third, 20th for touches in the opposition box and 20th for number of corners what does this highlight? We sit deep. Why is that? Our defence is too slow to recover. We need recruitment there so we can get more men forward to contribute to the attack.

I would look at the fair play tables for further evidence of this. We're second in the league for fouls per game, top for yellow cards and top for red cards. We give away a lot of yellow cards because our defence is caught out for speed so we give away more fouls. We also time waste a lot more to give ourselves a chance to recover.

I think Storey is our most valuable player. Experienced Championship defender at right age. Very rarely gets beaten, in the air or on the deck. Unfortunately had a ‘mare against West Brom last season but that’s the only bad match I can remember him having for us.
From a financial perspective; until he signs a contract extension, he won't be too valuable. Plus centre backs don't often go for big money. McCann is probably our most valuable player in this regard. Plenty of experience at this level, is a full blown international, and has a contract that runs for a few years

Hecky's done quite well with keeping us tight in some games. It's frustrating that we've still got the problem though where once we concede, we concede a handful

I hope that Cornell has a blinder tomorrow but I’m not confident…..

I think we might ship 3 or 4

Spot on well done .

Nailed on for Boro. Strong links from previous loanees, play 4231 and their LW option is Riley McGree who’s always injured

Aye that'd be my expectation that he'd be off there. Doak and Barry on the wings. Probably be before we play them on the 25th of January. Buzzing.

Latte Lath up top, Finna Azaz pulling strings

Tbf, I want Boro to do well for a few reasons, including because I’d much rather see them going up off the back of good football with sensible signings than one of the parachute payment clubs
