Matchday Thread PNE v Sunderland - 23/08/23 - KO:3PM - Championship

Remember last home game we lost 3 0 to this lot. May not of been pretty at times but hell.....much more entertaining than 90% of the games last season. Not getting carried away but we can definitely compete this season. Only worry is with Ali going off and Whitemans injury seeming to not be healing were suddenly looking thin in that dept...But so what let's just enjoy the moment 👍

Great to kick off at home with a win, mostly fought a rearguard action looking to counter attack in an SG style, except for short spells where we deployed the high press - perhaps mindful that we can't keep up a high energy game for long.

Lucky first goal but an accomplished second, both created by Frøkjær, easily our most important player right now.

Hopefully the injury to McCann isn't serious.

Get in! Apologies to the old timers in the Ship Inn, Weybourne who I almost gave a heart attack to when Mads scored.

Well done for sticking with Best as well. Easy decision would have been to hook him at half time but that will do his confidence world of good. Clearly we need to invest soon though on both sides.

Any road, back to the bar. COYW.

To get 4 points out of the two fixtures we’ve had, with one striker and a 17 year old playing left back, Lowe deserves credit.

Not been pretty but if we can get a ST and a LWB in (assuming the Ramsay injury isn’t too bad) then we’ll hopefully be in a position to play slightly more expansively.

Would like to see Holmes start the next game with Mads and Keane.

Its great to be back COYW

Thought a draw might have been the fairest result not not bothered anyway….Brad Potts 10.
McCann injury is a big worry.

We deserved 3 points at Bristol City and today a point would have been about right.

Superb defending & goalkeeping against a very dangerous Sunderland side who've got pacey, flair, expensive players bulging out of their squad.

Overall a hard-working team performance with special mentions to Hughes, McCann, Browne, Ledson (yes really) and Woodman. Keane lead the line very well too.

Can't describe that game as boring!

Enjoy the win folks!!

Credit to two guys I never give credit to. The bought Ledson had a good game and Lowe made the right subs at the right time

Good performances from Potts, Mads, Keane and Holmes when he came on.

Sunderland won’t be doing much this season with end product like they showed today. Carved us open at will but really didn’t generate much in the way of shots on goal

Left wing back a big priority

My enthusiasm is curbed a little - this is still early days and the picture is unfolding. We did look tight and kept our shape well. We made Sunderland work for everything, I don't recall us giving them any freebies. Ball retention has improved so we're not on the back foot for long periods. To repeat what other posters have said about Duane Holmes - he's a ratter of the highest order, please stay fit.
