RIP Gordon Lee

I remember thinking it was a massive coup getting an ex-Everton manager in as the gaffer. I was aged about 12. Exciting times aged 12.

R.I.P.Gordon.

The most exciting arrival with us of someone with a previous Everton association was Derek Temple. But Gordon Lee did his best for us at a difficult time and as other entries here make clear a decent individual. RIP.

R I P Gordon,
Saved a sinking ship 81/82 after Doc's calamity.
Signed goalkeeper Martin Hodge on loan which proved vital in our escape. Received little backing for signings, eventually dismissed harshly Xmas 83.

He got another ex Everton keeper in on loan, Jim Arnold. Also, Paul Lodge, George Telfer and David Jones were other ex Everton players, brought to the club by Gordon Lee.

I remember going into St George’s shopping centre just before the start of the season and Gordon was there with all the players meeting the fans and signing autographs. Think I’ve still got the pendant they gave out with several signatures on it including Gordon’s. he did look like Lurch though!

Thats right, remember those lads now, thought Lodge was a decent player at our level.
Think he was a Southport lad.
He was but he hardly played again once Lee got sacked, Alan Kelly obviously didn’t rate him. Lee got one or two players doing very well who had struggled under Docherty - Joe Hinnigan and John Kelly spring to mind but the player I best remember from his time was the aforementioned Martin Hodge. What a keeper he was.

A quote that sums up his philosophy, by which he built his sides on teamwork and hard work rather than individual talent.

"People keep on about stars and flair. As far as I'm concerned you find stars in the sky and flair at the bottom of your trousers."

Probably not a big Specials fan then. More Free, Fleetwood Mac and Fairport Convention.
Remember his name and it’s sad news.
RIP Gordon.

Hodge was a cracking keeper. Loved John Kelly, proper tenacious midfielder and ‘Joe! Joe! Have a go’ Hinnigan who I met many years later at Rochdale on a coaching course.
