Matchday Thread Sheffield Wednesday v PNE - 07-12-24 - Championship

I was doing a bit of maths around this before.

Technically, we're on track for around 49 points under Heckingbottom. Although we've earned 19 points from 19 games, he wasn't in charge for the first two games so he's earned us 19 points from 17 games. That'd put us about 1.118 points per game which, over the course of 44 games (taking away the two from the start of the season), would be 49 points

Looking at last season, of the bottom 10 teams at this stage, 7 of them were still in the bottom 10 at the end of the season, and 3 of the 7 went down. The season before, it was 6 out of the 10 stayed bottom 10; the season before that 8 out of 10 stayed in the bottom 10 (and in fact 8 out of the bottom 8 stayed in the bottom 8!).

Although it's early days and everything looks possible, a lot of features of the bottom 10 are probably already baked in. We just need to hope we're not one of them.

The second Potts miss would probably have won us the game and maybe kickstarted our season with a good win.
It obviously puts the spotlight on the balance of the team, getting Brady back and adding another left sided player in January.
However I would just like to give Potts the credit for the work he put in yesterday.
His effort deserved to win the game not to be the reason we didn’t win.

I really like Potts ( there, I’ve said it !) but I think he deserves more than being the square peg in the round hole of wing back . He does some great defensive work. There was one occasion where he was turned inside out by the left winger but recovered enough to get the player to hit the ball for a goal kick . I’m inclined to think that he worked hard to get to the far post for those two chances he missed . KH doesn’t get himself in those positions . With the criticism he gets on here maybe it’s best he doesn’t play at all

I do think we'll finish in the bottom 10, and would be very surprised if we do finish above that, just don't see us getting relegated.

Hard to say this far out IMO - we're very fragile when it comes to injuries and suspensions. I think it could easily go down to the last 5 games or so, when we have a lot of potential six-pointers.

Our record at closing out the season is well-known of course.

KKH is pretty damn good at getting into those overlap positions honestly. He's often bombing up the outside to get a return ball, and I've noticed him a few times getting into the area to try and get a shot in.

I like Potts' work rate, and his physicality as an outlet. But yesterday he completely blew that huge chance, and also was way too soft defensively for the cross that led to their goal their player had too much space.

In the wing-back role Potts' defensive work is very good - he is very often the player who makes the tackle or puts in the clearance that puts us back in possession. The problem is that as an attacker in that role he lacks any sort of dribbling skills or all too often any imagination when crossing - he is at his best in the latter respect when he does not have the time to think about it but has to act instinctively. The question is where might he be any better - he is not an out-and-out striker nor is he a central midfielder because he lacks the ability to pick a pass. It is a question we have never answered in all the time he has been with us. Just possibly he might be OK playing just behind a main striker - the role Greenwood plays at the moment - where he would bring robustness and a thunderous shot though not much guile. But given how exhausted he looked yesterday the best thing for him this coming Wednesdsay might be a rest.

I’ve just seen the plastics goal from yesterday were they began to celebrate gaining promotion again.
That’s the sort of luck we’re not having at the moment.

I used to do a bit of refereeing and understood the laws of the game - maybe that’s why I stopped 🤭

I was always taught that if something came into the field of play (in this case a bottle) it should be treated as part of the field of play and play should continue. Something must have changed or maybe it’s just that disgrace of a referee?
There was the Sunderland v Liverpool game where a goal went in after a deflection off a beach ball thrown onto the pitch, and that goal stood.

I wonder if the rule changed at the same time as the referee started to stop play when the ball hit him/ her and gave it back to the team who had possession.
I’m just guessing though.
Remember when we scored a goal courtesy of a rebound off Uriah Rennie. That wouldn’t be allowed to stand now.

law 8 restart of play.
referee blows if "an extra ball, other object or animal enters the field of play and interfere with play"
play is restarted with a drop ball.

There was a post yesterday - I think from bayside - that outlined the law as it stands now. I wonder if it changed (if it did change, it might always have been as it is now and I’m wrong) when Sunderland scored the beach ball goal?

Drawing every game 46 points gets you relegated.
Teams below us have games in hand.
A defensive error (central defender or GK) costs us at least a goal a game. Have to address this area 3 fold over the transfer window).
We are playing QPR just at the worst time in 2 weeks.
What are some players on the payroll for. Ched etc… even if for not going to command a first team place.
If this team falls into the bottom 3 at any point the mental frailty unlikely to stand up to it. There match control indicative of this.
Very precarious.

our striker errors cost us 2 points most games

Potts scores we win that alas he didn't so you take the point, my view we are slowly starting to get it together, Mds range of passing, Thor is a midfielder who can actually run forward with the ball
As for Freddie downs and ups in two games.
Yes disappointing not to win but the second half conditions were not easy, now a three day course of learning Welsh

Yaki Da 👍🏻👍🏻

Enjoyed listening to the Steve Eyre post match interview on Radio Blackburn…very positive and made some very good points.
Sorry haven’t got tech skill to post.
