First of all, Southgate does deserve some credit for the work he's done for us. From failing to beat Iceland and before that failing to qualify from a group which Costa Rica came top, we've progressed a lot.
2 finals and a semi final in 4 tournaments is something we have never had the fortune of seeing before. More knockout wins in 8 years then the previous 50 odd years, 3 penalty shoot out wins. He's made a positive influence on the national set up.
Let's not forget, he's been working for the FA since 2011, so he's been involved on the development of youngsters for us, and created a togetherness we've never had before.
Having said that, unfortunately it's not quite been enough to get us a tournament win. Maybe he should have gone after the last World Cup, but he had to leave now.
Where we go I'm not sure. Of course ideally we want an English Head Coach, but we're low on options. Howe and Potter at best, with Carsley the option if recruit from within. It wouldn't surprise me if he's the 'interim' for our games in September.
If we decide a foreign option is better than what we have, Tuchel and Poch have to be considered. I feel they would be an improvement on Sven and Fabio who had no experience of the English league previously.
I really don't see Klopp being interested at all. He said he wants a year off, and adamant he will have it after not doing that then he left Dortmund. Also, can his style of football work at international level, when he doesn't get much time on the training ground? Not to mention, next Summer he will likely get one of the biggest club jobs in any league he wants.
It's a very big decision, and one I hope takes us that final small step we need to get over the line.
