Summer 2024 : Transfer Window Rumours and Discussion

This isn't true.

"They are players the club identified with Ryan, that we needed"

"It’s a player our scouts have scouted and of course, Ryan was very happy with the potential acquisition. But, this is a club recruit which Ryan had bought into - as opposed to the recruitment taking place because one person wants them, which is not the way it works.”

I take it you didn't see the club video that was put in the aftermath of the Okkels signing. No matter what he may have said previously, that was the version that Ridsdale officially put out to justify proceeding with the signing despite Lowe's departure.

Of course, the problem we all have is that what Peter says on a Monday isn't always what he says on a Tuesday about the exact same thing.

Perhaps we should all stop quoting him in debates with fellow fans. His word clearly can't be trusted.

Interesting comments from PH on Kian Best in the Post just now. Basically that he needs to push on to get himself in contention. Will be interesting to see if he's on the bench and there's now quite a bit of competition. For those pushing for Best to be in the team personally I don't think we've seen enough from him yet and thought a loan would have worked for him.

Played 90mins tonight and scored a free kick so won't be in the squad tomorrow.

Lost 7-1. Theo Mawene sent off.

Why don’t we just wait and see how Okkels performs rather than crucifying the poor chap before he is given the chance of a few games to show us his ability.

Can’t see a single post ‘crucifying’ the lad on this thread. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The criticism is aimed at Ridsdale for splurging a large portion of our budget on a player without having a manager in place (and by the looks of things, seriously overpaying on the deal).

When the new manager arrived 48hrs later, he was unable to sign players he wanted because (to quote his interview with Radio Lancs): ‘The money is gone.’

Nothing to do with Okkels himself - everyone hopes he turns out to be a good ‘un.

Everything to do with Sleepy Pete living out his wet dream fantasy of being an actual manager for a couple of weeks.

And, predictably, f****** it up. 😒

How do you or anyone else know that "we've overpaid" for him?

£1.7m might turn out to be a bargain 6 months down the line.

Robinson (one example) went to Sheff Utd for £7m. We thought they'd underpaid us, their fans thought they'd overpaid us. It didn't work out for Robbo there, doesn't make him shite as he was arguably our best player at the point of sale.

Maybe people should adopt a wait and see stance with all new signings.

Okkels, in Sweden with Elfsborg, finished 2nd by virtue of their +33 to Malmos +35 GD.

IF Elfsborg

On 26 August 2020 it was confirmed, that Okkels had joined Swedish Allsvenskan club IF Elfsborg on a deal until the end of 2024. After 29 goals and 16 assists in 118 games, Okkels left Elfsborg in January 2024.

The above means that Jeppe scored 1 goal every 4 games which over a season, if rounded to 30 in 120 to make my maths easier, means he would have scored 11 goals in 45 from the LW, quite impressive. Then you can add in the 6 assists over the same 45 game period (I chose the number 45 to represent a full season over here).

As I alluded to with Robbo (see also Nugent after just 3 games at Pompy after a £6m move), a wrong move doesn't make you shite player.

You don't extract those numbers at Elfsborg if you're a poor player, far from it. Maybe Utrecht have a numpty as a manager there!

I'm 100% behind Jeppe.

That's precisely the problem though JD. He may be a good player, but there is nobody behind him. Our options at left back are just Hughes, Best and possibly Brady. (KKH should be the upgrade on Potts down the right)

We didn't need third right-footed wide left player with Mads and Greenwood already there.

Because we could have got him for a million pounds cheaper if we seriously wanted him less than 6 months before we bought him?

Imagine a house was on the market at £700k. Person A buys it, lives in it for a couple of weeks, moves out and leaves it vacant for 4 months. Person B then comes along and pays £1.7m for the same house 5 months after the previous purchase. Have they not overpaid? Would you not be asking the question what the fuck were you thinking (even if the house was amazing)?

This is what happens when you give control of the budget (and recruitment) to a septuagenarian failed knicker salesman, with a track record of frittering away millions of pounds at different football clubs.

Why make Greenwood your first signing - an unnecessary replacement for Woodburn - when we have needed wing-backs for 3 years? Six transfer windows and we've still only signed 1, a loanee who leaves next summer.

Why fail to sign a left wing-back from Slavia Prague and then panic buy a left winger (Okkels) at an inflated value, spewing away most of the transfer budget as well? I don't care how many years he had left on his contract, Utrecht paid €700k for Okkels, who failed to impress in the 6 months he was there, and we shell out £1.9m on him? Lunacy.

Why indulge the new manager with a ball-carrying winger on loan when our defence is so weak, lacking in the pace and mobility needed to play the higher line that the manager seems to want?

Why on earth include options to buy in the loan contracts of both Greenwood and Bowler, when next summer we will need at least 2 centre-backs, 2 wing-backs, 1 or 2 strikers, and at least 1 keeper?

Why? Because we have a directionless Director whose only priority seems to be looking after himself. Because we have a Chairman who is a fan and a businessman, but who displays none of the attributes of either whilst letting the Director run us into the ground. Because we are owned by a Trust, whose trustee don't want us and can't wait to get rid.

Ridsfail out !

Very good post

Frokjaer isn't a wide player - he is a playmaking central midfielder who is also good at roaming out wide particularly to the left when the opportunity arises in order to find space or link up with the wide man playing there. If Frokjaer and Okkels can replicate even exceed the way that Frokjaer and Millar meshed with each other then that could be more than useful.

You’re missing the point, Jack.

We are ALL 💯 behind the player and want him to do well.

But in terms of overpaying; imagine he doesn’t start a game for us between now and January.

He makes five sub appearances (and gets taken off in one of them), never doing enough to earn a start.

The fans are generally ‘unconvinced’.

Then along come some random German second division side whose 72yr old CEO offers us three times what we’ve paid - approximately £5m - for him in January.

Are we - or are we not - having their pants down? 🙃

He starts today Staffs! 😂👍

People need to separate Okkels from Ridsdale.

Not fair on the lad. He'll be a fine acquisition imo.

All about opinions though.

I can’t explain this any more. The scenario I referred to was his time at Utrecht.

I too hope he’ll be a fine acquisition. 👍

I haven’t got an opinion on him yet. 👍

But I’m chuffed that he’s starting today to see a bit more of him. 👍

And I still want Ridsdale out.🤓

I think somehow, we are on the same smudged page.
