Trainspotters

Bought Train Sim World 4 for the PS5 in the Black Friday Sale. I'm new to it all, having never played the previous ones, but the level of detail is amazing.

I've fucked up a couple of times - once during the training where I was coupling a Class 66 to some wagons and it suddenly started moving before I could get back on. It ran away and eventually derailed! 🤣 Also failed a scenario as I passed a signal at danger.

Anyway, here's The Flying Scotsman which I was driving (my actual screenshot from the game)

An add-on was recently released which is the Preston - Blackpool branches and Preston - Ormskirk where you can drive a pacer.

It's going to take some learning but I think this will be a lot of fun!

I do quite a lot on Train Simulator Classic. The level of detail isn't as good as TSW but I've had it for years and it's great to have on my laptop for long trips away to pass the time.

Ravensthorpe? I thought that was a made up settlement from Assassins Creed Valhalla?

Might try one of these train sim games. Tsw the recommended one?
Would certainly recommend TSW4 - think the deluxe edition is on sale again at the moment until 5th Jan. It's well worth it - have bought some of the additional route packs but I've tended to buy them whenever a sale comes round as the full price is pretty steep.

Really want the Preston, Ormskirk and Blackpool route has that's been very highly rated but I can't justify the cost at the moment.

How well done are the routes? How close are they to the real layouts etc?

I only have Train Simulator and have FAR too much invested in it now to change and start again... I love it, even though it is only 64-bit graphics. There's a sale on Steam so I think you can get the base game for about £7 at the moment, and lots of other routes at up to 70% off.

The Preston to Carlisle route over Shap, and then Carlisle to Glasgow are both absolutely bang on! I'm constantly creating new scenarios for those...

It looks good to me!
However I'm on PS5 so what suits that best.

I only use my Windows 10 laptop so it's only basic but no massive gamer so am really happy with it.

Currently building a modern scenario taking a 30 wagon Freightliner from Ribble Viaduct to Coatbridge FLT on a Wintery night. En-route the Caledonian Sleeper has failed, so on an icy rail you have to push all 16 coaches and a dead class 92 in to Beattock Loop and then climb to the summit from a standing start...

Pretty much spot on IMO and the attention to detail is fantastic.

The flexibility of the game is pretty amazing so - you can create your own scenarios or piss around in freeroam. I was able to take a Class 101 on a 'tour' in Germany and a Class 166 to Saltburn from Middlesbrough 🤣

Just out of interest are any Nobbers perusing this thread into railway modelling? Do you have any shots of your layouts to share.

If so anyone have any advice for a person who may be considering building one and is new to the hobby?🤔

Started getting a few models together to make a diorama a couple of years ago and it sort of fell by the wayside.

Might try resurrecting that this year...

I put one together but was discouraged when it came to doing the embankments and scenery. Also, I don't have a lot of room. This layout is 6' x 4'.(and is currently stored in my basement). If you're going to do it, take your time, be patient, and have a deep wallet. It's addictive.

Hi Sid,
Deep pockets is correct the hobby is not a cheap one. I’m not sure what to do gauge wise at the moment. I’ve been thinking about a garden railway possible O or G gauge. Nothing elaborate, end to end rather than a loop. As you say I’ll take plenty of time to plan it before starting on the project. Also the scenics would probably be my downfall as I’m not that artistic😂 so a outdoor railway might be less of a problem in that respect

Thanks for the advice Sid
