UK Politics

I’m not really following what’s happening in politics too much these days but the Winter Fuel Payment decision has obviously been catastrophic. Replacing Reeves would be a way of saving face when reinstating it, a handy person to blame. And that’s before you look at other reasons.

Her and Darren Jones (who just lives off sound bites) locked themselves in early doors with their promises of no tax rises.

They obviously made that promise to try and win votes. But they should’ve realised that they didn’t need to make that promise to get the Tories out of power.

Absolutely this, its now time for politicians to put the country first

It’s January. Is the Riddler in charge of government appointments too? Isn’t there another statement/budget due before June? If they aren’t happy why let another one be delivered

I listened to it. Some of it very much hit home, some I’m not so sure about.

Despite the headline , this was no interview lamenting some deep state conspiracy for her failure in office. But it did reference the supposed “ independent bodies” within the establishment that are very much capable of “ group think” which self perpetuates as they recruit similar and thus they become not very independent at all. The rape gang scandal was used as an example.

Also Because of where they are recruiting from, and where these people live, it is very London centric , and the politics of London become the politics of the nation, to the exclusion of the towns and the shires outside. I think that’s a fair point.

Also discussed the dangers of when these establishment organisations get too much power, and they have a tendency to abuse this power, using the post office scandal as one example. One thing that wasn’t touched on though, or if it was I missed it, was the handling of covid and lockdowns.

Finally touched upon the frustrations of the voting public at the system , who think they are voting for change , but just end up with more of the same because of the group think within the establishment . But she did say or imply that it was because the politicians did not have the balls to sack them that this happened ( this was within their power) and that maybe we will get 350 strong mps one day who will address this. But it would be a hard fight.

Not quite sure what you’re getting at jake but I’m sure they made a clear statement that they wanted to take budget statements back to being an annual event - rather than business and the public having to be chopping and changing every few months, like the last lot had us doing.

My bad, I was thinking the Spring forecast could still be used. You are correct

She has lasted longer as Chancellor than Truss did as PM, and hasn’t crashed the economy so, I’d say doing ok.

Although it could be argued that losing 12p against the dollar, since her autumn statement is cause for concern.

I do accept there are other factors in play as well though.
