UK Politics

Trying to do a US style election arent event, i just dont see them working in the UK, its a very different political scene over here, hes just trying to make more money by selling tickets to the sheep who hang on his every word (i hate the word sheep, but thats what all his supporters call anyone who opposes them)

An interesting poll suggesting that a majority Gen Z would support a 'strongman' leader and have lost faith in democracy:

However, there are a number of caveats - firstly, the spread of ages, from 13-27. That is a world of difference and I would be sceptical of the findings. Secondly, it is an opt-in poll which does tend to exaggerate views and open the door for people who enjoy trolling. Still, it will be interesting to dive deeper once the methodology and results emerge.

While researching, I did find the Guardian take on it from David Mitchell:

I will let you make up your own minds about that one! 😀

Not politics necessarily, but couldn't think of another thread.
Opinions please?
Should part time staff be paid overtime at time and a half? Example, a part time worker who normally does 20 hours each week decides to do 20 extra hours one week. 40 in total. If the extra 20 hours they've worked are paid at time and a half, they earn more that week than the full time workers who have done their normal 40 hour shift.
Do you think this is acceptable or not?

No, rate for the job. Overtime usually after 37 hours. Unless it's "unsocial hours" etc. Working night shift or weekend. Then the pro rata shift enhancement would generally apply.

“Starmer will definitely be forced to resign over this” is a recurring theme in the type of tweets pennyhome has been posting recently. It’s just shite.

But I don’t believe it to be coincidence… or just Joe Public picking up on the phrase. IMO, it’s one of a few themes and phrases that are carefully being pushed through selected influencers by unscrupulous people with an agenda.

Whatever side we’re on, we all need to wake up and stop sharing this type of manipulative stuff - because it’s not just Tories/Reform who do it.

I agree, but its back to people have to be expected to be held to account to the same standards they hold others to.

I won't criticise people for breaking lockdown rules because quite frankly I frequently broke them myself. They defied common sense and I object to the state dictating to me whether I can see my mother, go to the shop, who can come for xmas dinner , how many of my mates can sit sit in my back garden and have a beer and where they can go for a piss. Its astonishing how people were taken in by all that crap.

I said at the time, one day everyone will say they were against shutting downs schools and hospitals, denying people access to their elderly relatives, attending funerals etc etc and that the lockdowns were too harsh and for too long. It will be looked back upon as the most foolish government interventions of all time.

But people like Johnson and Ferguson were making the rules up, or at least telling us what we had to do, so they were obliged to stick to them themselves ( they didn't because in their heart of hearts they knew they were a load of shite, but that's no excuse).

And people like Starmer who chose to hound them out for their behaviours need to be totally without reproach themselves. And if not they cannot complain about getting the same treatment.

I haven't got time to reply in full. Some people seem to not give much of a shit about society... I get that.

This is tangential to the post you're replying to of course. I agree that if Starmer has done things that broke lockdown rules to the same degree as, say, Johnson, then he deserves to be criticised.

Johnson was not hounded out because of one or two incidences of breaking lockdown rules.

I don’t think it’s a case of “ degree”, that’s just sounds like making excuses for someone who you happen to like.

Starmer is a man who likes rules. You either keep to them or you don’t if want you to be as sacrilegious about them as he was at the time. Having a voice coach round for tea in his house on Xmas Eve was either allowed or it wasn’t. ( I honestly don’t know, but if one thing can be done by zoom, surely it’s voice coaching ? ).

Personally, if he and his fancy piece were both ok with it, I don’t give a shit. And it’s obviously just political point scoring bringing it up now. But he obviously did give a shit when lecturing others on it. So he must be held to account by the same standard.

The problem is that when people keep sharing the same BS over and over again, people simply stop taking any notice even when you are telling the truth. Whether it is about Starmer, Trump, or anyone/anything else, it becomes self-defeating. I dislike Starmer, but now shrug my shoulders at most of the posts about him because they are inaccurate/exaggerated/irrelevant. Constant propaganda eventually becomes counterproductive and only appeals to people who already agree with you.

And then you have Kemi Badenoch referencing it in her PMQ's.

I really don't rate her at all. He just seems to bat her away like an annoying fly every week.

Whilst true for people who take a reasonable degree of interest in politics, that is largely true. But I think there's a lot of evidence that many people who (probably wisely!) don't pay too much attention to politicking, I think these themes get through... hence the value of tabloid front page headlines.
