Wait for January, Wait for Summer... (Poll)

What should PNE do about recruitment?

  • Ridsdale/MRKT/Wallace oversee contracts & January recruitment then stepdown/be removed this Summer?

  • Remove Ridsdale/MRKT/Wallace immediately, get through January, put a new team in place this Summer?

  • Let Ridsdale/MRKT/Wallace continue as normal in current roles?

Are we getting to the point here where Ridsdale walks?

He has always struck me as surprisingly prickly about criticism/insults/complaints he gets from PNE fans. Now that's not just the enlightened majority, but now pretty much everybody, does he just say 'I've had enough?'

One or two factual inaccuracies and quite annoying presenter but he seems to have a pretty good handle on where we are as a club. Sadly, overall, there's not much I can disagree with.

I think it's spot on. Other well educated, switched on neutrals are saying similar. NTT20 have described us as one of the worst squads in the division and tipped us to struggle more than the 'mid table' tradition.

Definitely by staying the same we HAVE gone backwards. No defensive signing was suicide and we have actually been really lucky KH has been as good as he is.

I think it’s evident that he will never walk, if what’s been said is true - he’s managed to have his LEP question struck off from publishing.

The term ‘prise from my dead fingers’ comes to mind. He is so arrogant and proves time and again that he doesn’t give a shit about the fans or the club for that matter - unless it’s providing him with his money and ‘status’.

At 72 - why would you want to hold a position in a club that is going nowhere, you have no ‘rooted’ links to the club, and could literally be anywhere in the world with the money he will have.

Very soon, he is going to see the resentment and hate from the fans on a weekly basis, because I don’t even think our fans will continue to put up with it.

and give up his dosh, perks and EFL board place, I very much doubt it

Yeah, I know what you are saying, it seems daft. My point is, he doesn't have the character trait many people in positions of leadership has where he can shake it off. I've worked for people that literally don't give a fuck that everyone working for them think they are a cunt.

Historically, how did LUFC finally get rid of the albatross around their necks ?
Historically, how did Barnsley finally, etc etc...?
Plymouth ? Cardiff ?

Beavon cost £250k.
May was, off memory, £800k.
Pearson was a bargain £300k.
Doyle was I think £600k. Shudder!
Fisher I can't remember exactly but it was less than £300k.
Stockley was £750k. Yikes!!
If I remember rightly we signed Doyle after an underwhelming loan on a three year deal!!! It was Trevor who pushed for it rather than Grayson. Just summed Trevor and this club up. Happy tk waste money on Doyle but won’t sanction an extra 500k for kieffer moore because he didn’t think he was worth it.

No defensive signjng was suicide. To make it worst we spent 1.7 million on a player we did not need it even use. Disgraceful.

One of Trev's many shite qualitie was trying to think he knew something about the game. He went to Ireland and bought cheap horses, brought them back and had success in that at the races. His wealth and arrogance gave him the feeling he had some Midas touch with players too. All the signings he forced through took us backwards.

Craig, through inactivity, is just as shite. We need to separate ourselves from the Hemmings

"I'd be really disappointed if I'm only getting presented names that I knew, otherwise I might as well do it all..."

The way he describes recruitment, it's the old Frankie/Lowey model, post-Joe Savage, post-Ridsdale ban - Peter is the Head of Recruitment, PH just provides vague player attributes to tap into the MRKT app filters, then Peter handles the rest, picking the funniest-sounding names for the Chief Scout to look up on YouTube.

I put precisely that on the Jeppe Okkels thread the other day, while talking about him having been presented with a name he already knows, ie Josh Bowler;

I've never heard Heckingbottom say he specifically wanted Josh Bowler, just that he "wanted somebody who could take a man on" and "change the dynamic" of how we play...

Couple that with him "liking the simplicity" of our set-up and match it with what Frankie said about our recruitment team the last time anyone was so open about it:

Frankie McAvoy in the LEP, May 2021;

The Scot will still be involved in recruitment of players but Ridsdale, who is advisor to North End owner Trevor Hemmings, will be the head of it.
“My role is to coach the players and get the best out of them, that is what I do. In terms of recruitment Peter is in charge of that process and I will have input about where we need to strengthen"

And also talking to the New York Times in August 2021;

“Everybody is looking to have more than we’ve got — Peter and the guys who deal with recruitment, Craig Lawlor and James Beet. I’ll have a say in it but Peter will decide on what is viable for us as a club. I’m fully involved in the process and the players we are looking at, so nothing is done without me having a say in it.

So I get the distinct impression that the Manager decides we need a certain type of player and area we need to strengthen, then MRKT check out Wyscout for a list of names for that role, and then the "Master Negotiator" does his thing... Not necessarily targeting a specific player the manager wants, although he does have an input and will be part of the talks with the players.

Yeah, it's all very much outsourced to Peter.

And despite the initial novelty of us spending low 7 figures on one or two of these "names we haven't heard of", we're not exactly hiring ready-made gems to drop straight into the team, blast us into the top 6, then flip for a handsome profit 2 years into their 4-year deals.

It's mostly just relatively expensive projects, who have to be eased in and get used to the league for a couple of years, then eventually they might be able to cope with our trademark low-speed style of play.

Yeah. It absolutely baffles me that our defence has been shit for years (& the sole reason why Frankie and Hecky play(ed) a back five), and yet our first choice defence is still the exact same as when we lined up against Hull on the first day of the 2021/22 season!

You have to credit the legend in his own lifetime, the eponymous Mr GRIMsdale,
