World Cup Final.

Sshhhh if you like mens football you are automatically sexist, misogynistic if you don't show how much you love women's football. That's the rules.

I think that may be an agenda for a few. For me watching womens football is a new unexpected pleasure. Clearly its becoming more 'professional' but to date it has a purity and innocence that has been thoroughly engaging. I watched MOTD2 last night and fell asleep. The commercial marketing overhyping circus that surrounds the mens product far outweighs any entertainment value so that I feel Im being constantly duped. Its fundamentally boring watching a production line of characterless lithe fuelled athletes that could be playing in any coloured shirts. It survives mainly because it feeds off the fans undying loyalty and rosetinted specs and now the billions that will follow anything promoted as the mode on the net. I switched off the last WC final after 30 mins.

I thought the Sky commentator at the West Ham game put the boot in on England women a bit….

As the camera panned onto Gareth Southgate the commentator said “ Okay Gareth so it’s back onto you again to give us some World Cup success after this morning “
But commentators on women's football have been saying the same about men's footy failures for ages, harping on about how England's women will show the men how to land a trophy. Err, conveniently forgetting all about 1966. I'm with JD, not a fan of women's footy, I'm football daft but if there was a match of the day every week for women's footy I wouldn't tune in. And that's in no way sexist, I'm just not keen on it.

Thats mainly male commentators like Pearce. I thought Id fallen out of love with football until I started watching womens footy (for now) and Weston Super Mare. Made me realise I hadnt but that its top flight football that has effectively changed and had its heart stolen. Its become homogenised and sterile as a product. Its main purpose seems to be marketing and a method to legitimise uncompetitive practices, big business and corrupt regimes.

Tbh when I watched Chelsea on TV I was astonished that some of these multi million quid new players on view could hardly trap a sack of cement or run with the ball. Just athletes. Better football players on Moor Park. Makes me wonder how on earth they were scouted as kids.

If at half time they'd changed their shirts to PSG ones, half the viewers could be forgiven for thinking they were watching a Champions League game. The only identifying element of a club is now its fans and ground geography (for now at least).

I find women's footy refreshing to watch, no rolling about faking injury, no surrounding the ref at every decision (Liverpool when MaCallister was sent off) abiding in the main by the laws of the game, perhaps the skill levels are not the same but the integrity sure is way higher, the only thing the men's game has is the overpaid arseholes who steal a living leaching off the back of their fanatical supporters.
The men's game does however provide jobs for thousands and that is it's only saving grace imho.

By enlarge football is played by thicko's, managed by deluded thicko's, owned by real thicko's (spunking billions) and supported by thicko's where at an early age the histrionics of their idols was copied, no respect for anyone especially authority and ref's, this new rule re surrounding ref's didn't even last a week, you just don't see this in women's footy.

Well played England ladies and hard luck, if the Hemp chance had not hit the bar it was coming home.

Very good post Billy…..

Well that was all a bit of an anti climax. Am I alone in being really disappointed in the Lionesses performance yesterday? Thought they were poor by their general high standards. Yes, Spain were decent but the composure & decision making of the England girls was sadly lacking. Lucy Bronze, who I think has been a magnificent player, had the worse game I think I've ever seen her play. It seemed to me that the occasion got to them & that Spain had the better big game mentality. A magnificent effort to get to the final, but I bet there are plenty within the squad that have some regrets today

Feeling much the same about football - very rarely watch it now. Did catch a few Ayr matches last season that I enjoyed - nowhere near the skill levels of the Premier League, but much less of the histrionics and still good fun to watch. Proper old school. Like you, think that is where my love of football will be rediscovered.

Didn't manage to watch as much of the World Cup as I wanted due to work, but am going to try and watch more women's matches.
