This corona virus thing...

Work colleague whom I chat with in Blackburn whilst unloading there told me last week that due to the local lockdown there, people from Blackburn have since instead been shopping in Preston.

Be interesting, if that's the right word, to see our local figures here in the next week or two.
Well that says it all doesn't it.
"Lockdown " means jack.

Just makes it easy to measure how bad the virus is in a lot of people's heads. r Up = bad, r down = good.

If this whole process has taught us anything it is that a basic grasp of statistics should be a vital part of any education. So much miss understanding of the situation which has led to questionable behaviour
Yup - like the total deaths when used to compare countries. Pretty useless unless you know how the data was collected.

The media has annoyed me during this - they are supposed to explain and make things clear, but too many have shown that they have no grasp of even basic science.

It’s disgraceful.... when we get a second wave people will blame the government, but in reality, any second wave will be caused by the stupidity of people....

Lots of people from Blackburn normally shop in Preston anyway pre virus

But the government are weak. They should be telling people that they cannot travel to surrounding areas. Tell them they will be fined or whatever it takes.

they do nothing.

Just like the stupidity of people that started booking holidays to Spain when lockdown started easing.....

All non essential travel to ANY part of Spain now not recommended by HM Govt.

Be interesting to see in a few weeks time what has happened to this possible second wave in Spain.
I assume the government have checked with the experts to get a view on this and decided to stop people going before tourism gets in real full flow.

Having said that I fear we will possibly have a second wave here fuelled by bars and nightclubs paying no heed to any restrictions.

Personally I still find it bizarre that in a pandemic there is this need to have the life saving 2 weeks in the sun 🤔

You're missing the point in the most spectacular of fashions.

Think about it.

Not really, I totally understand your point but I’m adding to it.

I shall also add that lots of younger people from Blackburn enjoy socialising in Preston, it has a lot more to offer, and more still will be coming to avoid the Blackburn lockdown. And this I think is potentially far more dangerous for spreading the bug.

Am I being to cynical in thinking that maybe the opening of the holidays to Spain then a quick lockdown could be deliberate?

I am still waiting for money back for a trip I should’ve been taking in March. All the travel agents will have had a massive influx of cash over the last couple of weeks, cash they can sit on for a couple of months before they start paying back. Like a float, hoping that it will reopen more in the immediate future. It’s certainly bought some time for the leading travel agents and airlines.

Interesting thought but I think you are looking to deep.
I don’t think our government could organise a spike in infections in Spain to justify it.
Just coincidence but I’m sure some conspiracy theorists could use it.....

I didn’t realise the figures had changed all that much?

I'll quote Hanlon's Razor again, "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity."

At a very basic level, if you have 1 case and the day after it’s 5 cases, would the r figure not be 5? I know it’s more complicated than that but it highlights why, as cases decrease, the r figure isn’t particularly relevant.

Correct. When the numbers are low the R rate isn’t really worth looking at as a small number of cases can send it above 1

I don’t really understand why they have to put a blanket ban when the islands are ok.

That does seem a bit OTT
